You know when a book takes you a bit of time to get through but you don't actually mind, and instead let yourself seep into the story and marinate in-between the pages. This was such a well written, well crafted story that doesn't really fall into one specific genre and is instead an amalgamation of multiple different genres, all effectively used to convey this deeply unique story. Today I learnt that I need to read everything Kate Morton has written.

Wow! Mystery is a difficult genre for me. It's very slow moving, and I need to know what's going on long before the last few chapters. But those last few chapters always make up for it. What a devastating and touching story. It pulled on my heart strings. I love the way all of the characters are connected. They are all so fleshed out that you can't help but love (or hate!) them. The resolution at the end was perfect. Kate Morton does a wonderful job.

This one frustrated me. I usually love Kate Morton, but I found myself skimming through the middle which then led to a confusing ending. I also wanted more of a resolution - too many plot lines ended JUST before their true conclusion.

I listened to this one on audio, so I’ll preface this by saying it could be the format that didn’t work rather than the actual book. The narrator speaks very fast- I kept checking to see if the speed was at 2x! She spoke clearly so i could understand her, but it was annoying. The book moves around from people to people and time to time, which I normally enjoy, but in this case it was confusing and hard to follow. Overall, just “meh” for me.

Sadly I just couldn't get passed the first half of the book. It started off interesting and the plot was definitely there, but it was just off for me.

It is many stories, but one story. All ends tied in a way where your mind begs your eyes to read faster than they can

There were so many layers to this book. I loved it, and I gave it 5 stars because of how engaged I was. However, it felt like a story I had heard before... notes of movies like Titanic and books like The Secret Garden and Atonement and historical fiction about authors' groups like Mary Shelley, Lord Byron, etc. I honestly think our ghost's death could have been more interesting, but the story that leads up to it is incredible. Kind of a strange, anti-climatic conclusion.

It took a while to get into, but I loved how the author slowly unraveled the story of love, mystery, art and magic through delightfully flawed characters who go against the grain to follow their desires.
