Not that great. Fine for what it is. What do you call this genre? It's fantasy now or urban fantasy. Nothing too long or serious. Kind of pops you into the middle of the story without a lot of background and little depth. Like a Harlequin Romance. Short. Not a lot of depth. And yet, it is what it is.

There was a lot to like about this book. Firstly I actually liked the MC Nola...hurrah! I read so many UF books around this time where the female MC was a butt pain so I was pleased to like her. She is tough, has her vulnerable side and is a character that you can like and care about. Points to the author for that. Her complex relationship with food was interesting and added more to her personality, along with issues from her past. She was interesting and I looked forward to seeing her story.

I found Ari to be a bit annoying, the way he goes so alpha male and tries to control Nola. He was not what I like in a male hero and I wasn't convinced by the relationship between him and Nola. For me, it just didn't work and Nola needed someone more patient and understanding in her life. I don't like all the angst between the two MCs and it did bring the book down a bit for me.

The plot was interesting and there were some good elements in the world building but the book just lacked that 'something' to make it stand out for me. While I finished it and thought it was a decent read, I wouldn't read more in the series or anything else by the author.

Nola gets her orders from angels, she works for a secret government agency, and she is stuck with a hottie Israeli secret agent on the trail of a serial killer who is hunting werewolves. And there's her family.....
Action is fast...and I am looking forward to reading more of this series

I was really excited to begin reading this book and I absolutely adore Katharine Kerr's Deverry series. Unfortunately, this just wasn't up to par.

I'm not entirely sure what it was about this book that I disliked but the first part of it I had to push myself to continue reading it. Whereas, with her Deverry series, I enjoyed it from the get-go the way this book is written left me with a slightly disjointed feeling. Things were only partially explained or not done clear enough for me to tumble into the world and I have to wonder whether it is because this is written in first person.

Although I will get the sequal to see how things continue I'm definitely not in any particular rush to do so.

This book had a ton of mixed reviews so I was uneasy about starting it. I really like the cover and as you know by now I'm a "judge the book by the cover" kind of girl so I bought it and brought it home to read. NOW I had NO clue what the word Ensorcell meant and had to look it up so if your anything like me you will want to know that Ensorcell means to enchant or fascinate. Nola is kind of a loner and has an eating disorder that is definitely noticeable and talked about. I have read a few reviews where that has bothered a few people so I thought I would include that in case your one of those people that that would bother. I loved the use of San Francisco for the setting and landmarks. Kerr described things so that you feel right there inside the city right along with her characters. Nola's power is neat, she's comfortable with it and has no problem with making sure others know she is comfortable and confident in what she does. There was some slow parts in the plot, and some flow issues sporadically. The sex scenes were awkward and didn't really flow within the story. They would be getting down to business but the writing would just say, we had sex then jump right into the next paragraph being the next day. I thought the book was ok but am glad I read it as I think it has potential. It was different and I would like to see what happens with Nola in the future.

I just didn't get on with these characters. I liked the concept, but the execution was somewhat lacking. Very disappointing, given how much I love Katharine Kerr's other books.

Nothing particularly special about this detective urban fantasy/romance, but it was a perfectly enjoyable read if you're in the mood for that sort of mindless entertainment. Also, I'm glad Nola's
eating disorder
was finally addressed by the end, because it was exceedingly obvious.

First in a new series by the author of the Deverry series - so I was very excited to find it in the library. For some reason I am a sucker for mysteries that take place in SF, too. Good paranormal noir - good characters, plot, logic (for the magic). Not quite Kat Richardson for me, but close!
