I couldn't read more than about half of it. As I recall, the book was something like this: lots of buildup to something happening, thing happens between chapters, hero is way cooler because of the thing that the text skipped over.
Too much like Lord of the Rings. Characters and scenes are pulled directly from the pages of Lord of the Rings series. Many fantasies from the 1970s are like this
4,5/5

I thought that the adventure and history behind this book was very good. The storyline was very thought out and well written. The character development for each of the characters ended very well and over all I very much enjoyed this fantasy novel.
The Sword of Shannara - ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Is this a bit similar to LOTR if you squint? Yes. Did I love it because it has its own good and original qualities too? Also yes. Am I really excited to read the other 36 books in this universe? YES. Hotel? Trivago.
I read so many bad reviews on The Sword of Shannara, I contemplated not reading the book at all. But hey, I also love reading books that are slightly controversial. So while Sword of Shannara is similar to LOTR, it’s not a complete knockoff. Where LOTR is a completely new world, the Four Lands is the result of our own world, presumably after an apocalypse (I haven’t read that book yet, bear with me).
I loved The Sword of Shannara. Was it great? Maybe not. But it was very VERY good. It’s called an epic tale on the back of the book, and I think it deserves that. It is VERY lengthy, which made it a bit harder to read sometimes (hence the loss of 1 star), but it has plenty of action too. Great job Terry.
I truly get that some people are a bit upset about the similarities with the most iconic book series of all time, but I do encourage looking at it with the eye of inspiration rather than copycat. Terry Brooks was inspired by Tolkien rather than copied his work and adapted it. But in the end that’s all up to you of course.
I’m very excited to read the next parts, and the other series in this universe.

Okay so started this in 2024 but *technically* finished in 2025 and very happy to start my year with this series. I know many people say it’s a rip off of the lord of the rings but I’ll admit I still have not read those books
Great book, life just got busy! Definitely want to go back and reread to finish
The biggest gripe I read is that this is a rip off of Lord of the Rings. From there, most reviewers, who are already have a negative view of this book, pick apart all of the things that Sword of Shannara is not. OK, I have to agree that as Terry Brooks first book this is not his best.
But feel the need to ask: What fantasy novel is NOT based on some other story or mythology or archetype???
Authors continually borrow ideas and themes from other stories. I spend high school English studying these comparisons!!!
If anything, I feel that Terry Brooks picked up on Lord of the Rings and carried that theme and helped establish the fantasy genre. It is NOT the best fantasy novel ever, but it is an important milestone. For that Terry Brooks deserves some credit.
