As a murder mystery / psychological thriller I didn't feel it covered much new ground but I don't think I've read many books which so aptly illustrate the intensity of female teenage friendships. A friend of mine (who incidentally was a close friend as a teenager) commented that those teenage friendships are more like falling in love. Maybe I don't read enough YA books and this topic is covered widely but for me it added a new dimension to the boy/girl, man/woman central relationships. I don't think it would have worked as well if the characters were older - it's a teenage girl phenomenon..
I would not necessarily recommend the book to younger teens due to the topics (sex, drugs, drinking, murder) but it's not graphic or too disturbing.
Yes, you've probably heard of this one already... but Dangerous Girls is one of the best books I've read. It's the first book that pops into my head when I'm asked for a book recommendation. It hasn't been a miss with any of the people I've recommended it to yet... That's why I'm here to recommend it to you! *points at you through the computer screen*
Since I can't produce the words to review this as eloquently and insightful as I'd like to, I'll give you a list (because lists are beautiful and everything looks beautiful in list form).
Here are 10 reasons to read Dangerous Girls by Abigail Haas:
It's a murder/mystery novel.
I'm barely skimming the surface on this book, but the main issue is that Elise, Anna's best friend was murdered in Aruba, and Anna is accused as the main suspect. The whole story then tries to deconstruct what really happened in Aruba and who's actually responsible so Anna can be set free.

Literally everyone has a motive for murder.
No lie, you'll be suspicious of every single character. EVERYONE. Even that one guy who was casually walking his dog in page 34. (Kidding. Or am I?)
Everyone loves it.
I have yet to talk to a person who hasn’t liked it. Seriously. Go to Twitter, and ask anyone what they think of the book. (I dare you).
The writing is captivating.
I only intended to read for a little while but finished the book in one sitting. "One more chapter" is a lie when it comes to this book.
It's like a movie in your head! The author wrote it using multiple time frames, and honestly it's the best part of this book.
I honestly could imagine everything clearly in my head and I loved it. It was definitely a different experience.
It is unpredictable.
Literally. You'll never see it coming. (or you did but were in denial)
...totally unpredictable.
I yelled when the big reveal came up. My heart was pounding so quickly. It was amazing. I was left like:
...and very addicting.
"Just one more chapter" is a lie with this book.
It's actually very insightful, too. You get to learn about how the judicial system works.
It's an accurate portrayal of how the law works outside of the US, and if you're like me (future law student here), then you'll love reading about the trial.
Plus look at that cover!
No matter what cover you buy, they're all pretty captivating and amazing. They all have a certain 'eeriness'.
Have I convinced you to read this book yet? If not, just look for the thousands of other reviews that sing praises to this book as well! :)
