I really have no idea why I keep reading books from this series. I haven't really loved any of them but I keep reading them when I am in the mood for just light fast fluff so...whatev'.

Is it just me or does no one write a novella quite like Nalini Singh?

This was great. Loved it. I actually liked it better than the first two full length novels. This reminded me of her writing style in the Psy-Changling series rather. Probably why I loved it so much.

Galen was fantastic. Strong but not cruel. Far more my style than Raphael.

Angel’s Dance is a 128 page novella that takes place prior to Angels’ Blood; but I think it’s better appreciated being read after as having an understanding of the “world” in which the story takes place and knowledge of the secondary characters inhabiting that world adds to the enjoyment of the story. The story opens 100 years after Raphael ascended, becoming the youngest Archangel and newest member of the Cadre of Ten. His court is still in its infancy and the angelic warrior Galen petitions to transfer to Raphael’s territory as his weapon’s-master. Raphael has already hooked up with the vampire Dmitri who is his most trusted advisor. The angel Illium has just fallen in love with his mortal; and it is Galen who gives him the nickname of Bluebell.

Angel’s Dance is the story of Galen, the blunt, uncivilized, barbarian, lacking in the social graces warrior and Jessamy the 2500 year old virgin. Jess is a grounded/flightless angel. She was born with a mis-shapen wing which made her shy and self conscious. She hid herself away in the library at the Refuge and eventually became the teacher of all angelic young and the historian for the angelic race. As she matured and developed some confidence, she was courted – but she believed it was out of pity and shunned her suitors. Eventually it was believed that she preferred her peace. She was known as a teacher and a scholar and the boys stopped asking.

Galen however is not put off by Jess’s aura of unavailability. He makes it known that she’s the one for him and that he intends to court her. Before they reach their HEA, there’s some political intrigue that interferes as those Archangels who rule the world are forever trying to steal an extra piece of someone else’s pie. And then there’s the interpersonal issues that have to be worked through: Jess has to get over being scared to death of actually taking a chance at being happy and Galen has Mommy issues to work out. But ultimately they’re a very sweet couple and the surrounding story is passably interesting.

My low rating is purely based on personal preference. I really do think – it’s not the story – it’s me. I just wasn’t feeling any real chemistry in the romance – both Galen and Jess were just too…nice and…normal…for my taste. The very qualities that would make some folks love the story – especially readers who liked the world building of Angels’ Blood but thought Raphael was an asshat (whereas I thought he wasn’t asshat enough).

Jessamy and Galen have been regulars in the background of nearly every other book in the series so far, and it was so lovely to finally see their love story origin. I had no idea how old Jessamy actually was, and all of the things she's seen, but I loved how this story took place before she really grew into herself, and gave us a glimpse at other absolute babies, like a 100-year-old Illium (and how he started being called Bluebell!!) with brief mentions of his mortal lover (PLEASE SAY THAT STORY IS COMING SOON,,,) Aodhan prior to his Major Trauma, the barest beginnings of the rest of Raphael's court before the Seven became a thing, Alexander going into Sleep...so many little touches that helped flesh out the backstory of this world and everyone's favorite cast of troublemakers. I loved it.

I read this in the Angel's Flight compilation.

I loved, loved, this novella. I knew in Archangels' Kiss that Jessamy had a history and I had a feeling that Galen and she were together. Through the series we've had glimpses of these two and I was so happy to learn more. Jessamy is the teacher of all the baby angels and the keeper of the angels' history. She's an angel who can't fly because she was born with a twisted wing. I couldn't imagine that.

This story takes place 400 years ago right when Galen left Titus' court to become Raphael's weapons master. He was raised away from the Refuge so he had never met Jessamy before. He's very blunt and ends up insulting her and continues to accidently insult her. Of course they end up falling in love despite Jessamy's many attempts to guard her heart against his possible pity.

There are some angel politics in there also but mostly it's about their love. The best part is Galen takes her flying and they dance as angels do. We got to see Illium when he was in love with his mortal and we got to see Dmitri get taken down. Galen lives in the Refuge, which is actually necessary for Raphael.

This was definitely 5 stars and I quite enjoyed it. One more story about the Seven down.

Angels' Dance is also published as a single title.

If you have been reading the Guild Hunter series then you have caught glimpses of Galen and Jessamy, but in this novella, they shine.

I have been wanting their backstory for sometime. Galen is one of Raphael’s Seven. We get glimpses into him and what he does, but here we find out their is so much more to him. I loved Galen. He’s fierce, loyal, protective, and honorable. Jessamy is the teacher of angelic young, a library, and the keeper of angelic knowledge/archives. She’s fragile, strong willed, and has a strong heart.

Reading about these two was exquisite. They matched perfectly. The sexual tension was amazing. The writing is magnificent. The scenes are so vivd bring the characters and world to life.

Angels’ Dance was a beautiful crafted novella. I loved everything about this one.
