The Naturalist

I enjoyed the main character's focus on patterns in data and ecology to solve a mystery. I thought that was a newer twist on mystery novels. I was not a huge fan of the ending itself.

I was really looking forward to this book. I'm a college professor and a nurse in Montana. We really do have a problem with missing indigenous women, and, as a nurse in the ER, I see first hand we also have plenty of bear attacks! This book had so much potential! ... but it fell short.

I was ready to roll with the dopey professor character and much of the fabulous fumbling that took place. The author provided great explanation of scientific theory and application that really piqued my interest. It was the absolute bullshit medical explanations that peeved me. That is not how IVs, medications, or ambulances work. It made a great scene, but it was just to unrealistic.

It put a huge shadow of doubt on many of the other explanations that author provided. Like I said, this book had a lot of potential, but the author needs to do more research. His writing style was amateur and the book needs better edited.
tense slow-paced
Plot or Character Driven: A mix
Strong character development: Yes
Loveable characters: Complicated
Diverse cast of characters: No

An interesting premise, but ultimately pretty bland. The science wasn't ever delved into at any great length, instead the narrator and main character seemed to think everyone--including the reader--too stupid to understand. This led me to feel the author didn't put much thought into it and couldn't explain it, so didn't.

Too many shortcuts were taken to provide a gripping narrative. The main character was underdeveloped and bland. The killer wasn't even very scary.

I spent most of the book waiting to see the writing described in the majority of the reviews. It never showed up. Thankfully a short read, so not too much of my weekend was wasted.

This was an easy read. A page turner, especially in the beginning. 5+ stars to the first third. I felt the science authentic, the character and his motivation understandable and relatable.
The second third started to raise alarms (an academic choosing a beating over the quiet teaching? finding unmarked graves without much clue in a matter of days?) but really, it's last third that was a real disappointment. Despite of admitting that as a computational biologist our guy does not have more than basic knowledge in other areas of science, it's specific medical knowledge that he uses in the end. Not very believable any more. His reaction to the deaths around him in the later chapters differ very much from the first one and it's either a missed logic or a trait that's impossible to like.
Still, the setup was exciting, the uses of patterns in the investigation thought-provoking and the first chapters really gripping so it deserves 4 stars. It didn't make me want to read more though.

Воуу, це такий потужний і непередбачуваний трилер, від якого кров відверто холоне! Розслідування веде біоінформатик і своєю логікою пошуку відверто викликає довіру! Швидке і захоплене читання гарантовано.

Started slow, but accelerated into a well-written and intelligent thriller. Ending felt a little contrived, but overall the story survived it.

Loved it; smartly written.

Not a good book. I shouldn’t have finished it but needed to see where it went. Could have been much more promising if the author decided what the book should be about.

Serious Page Turner

Such a great read. I love a who done it but this adds a level of intelligence and science that really brings it home. Can’t wait to read the next of the series!!!
