I really didn't enjoy this book at all. I thought the writing was poor, and the plot was thin. I could not empathize with Hannah at all.

This was well written and thought provoking. It was able to portray depression and the struggles of growing up of an individual while reminding me of long forgotten emotions and pains of my own adolescence.

This is probably one of the best books I have read. Incredibly touching.

Edit: I’m writing this many years later, after the Netflix series has given this book a bad reputation. I would like to try to ignore the fact that the TV show has turned a wonderfully written novel into a high school soap opera. It’s a shame that the portrayal of this novel on the big screen has soiled my good memories of this book.

While I did feel the book was interesting, there were some things that really bothered me which stood in my way of truly enjoying the book. I think the author took the safe way out by having the protagonist be the only person on the tapes that "didn't fit." I would have much rather heard the story from any other of those characters. The story would have been much more complex.

Also, the fact that Hannah kept threatening the people that hurt her with the tapes, but couldn't even stand up to them in life, bothered me. You have the guts to tell everyone off - but only after your dead? What's the point?

I know that the teenage years are rough, and the author could have been trying to portray how lonely those years are, and how cruel everyone can be.

However, something about this book didn't sit right with me.

Have you seen the movie Easy A? I'm not even sure if that movie is based from a book. I'm too lazy to do a quick research on that. This story is a darker flipside version of that movie. Very timely, more real, and highly relevant too. Bullying has always been and will always be a large part of why most people, especially during their high school years, suffer from situational depression. I, for one, did.

This book should be a required reading for high school students. Why can't teachers find books like this? Why do they always force kids to read the classics that are too advanced for them? Have the kids read books that they can relate with. Like this one.

You know who else needs to read this book? Teachers themselves. Kids see their teachers more than their parents. When kids go to their teachers for help and/or advice, most of the time, they are not fully equipped with the things that could possibly help the kids. Why? Because they do not truly know them. They want the teens to grow up. The teens try to grow up and ask their teachers for guidance and they can't be more helpful than the next teacher in the faculty room.

This is a story on how we affect the people's lives that are connected with ours. Now I wonder, how do I influence the lives of my friends and family? Is my presence in their life doing good for them or not? Have you thought about it before? Are you even slightly sensitive on how you impact someone's life? DO you think you are on of the reasons why?

Interesting idea with a lot of potential. Potential not fulfilled; writing somewhat pretentious.

Damn. This was a hard read. It really dives into a life and the actions and events that led to an individuals decision to take their own life.

Quite an enjoyable read. Of course it was quite morbid but it was well written and there was something quite compelling about discovering exactly what happened.

I would definitely recommend it, it wasn't a highly sophisticated read and I finished it over 4.5 hours. However it is one of the few YA novels I have read that speaks quite frankly about the complexities that teenagers lives contain without it feeling preachy.
