I picked this up after wanting to read Mera: Queen of Atlantis also by Dan Abnett. The timeline occurs after the Geoff Johns run. Once again, Arthur is trying to stop the US and Atlantis for destroying one another. It made sense that he would want to built an embassy to build the two worlds.

description

But as luck would have it, Black Manta and the Deluge won't allow him to succeed.

I liked how Mera supports him whole heartedly and wonder how they got to this level of a connection. Arthur, you should just marry the lady! she is very loyal and wise.

description

He struggles with how the surface world sees him as the joke and side kick to the Justice League. The guy is balancing alot on his plate. Give him a break!

The art was all over the place. At times, it was great but others was just meh or nah. I am still interested to read the next volume.

I enjoyed this story. I felt like the new 52 was a better start, but very few can compare to Geoff Johns as a storyteller. They are never going to let Aquaman just resolve his to kingdoms, Atlantis and the US, are they? This will forever by this archetype. I wouldn't mind seeing a different type of story than always this push, pull of Arthur's two halves.

I don't really understand why comic books set up their good guys to fight each other over and over. It seems people love seeing the good guys fight each other as much as they like seeing them fight bad guys. I get tired of it. It's quite the trend right now. oh well. I never seem to be on trend, or rarely. Hey, not everyone can be.

Usually, a country will either try and resolve a situation peacefully or maybe go to war, but they don't seem to take the approach of locking up the president or King of a nation. I think this was a strange reaction. It just seems like a set-up to me and if an embassy blows up, usually the government tries to figure out who did it, not closing it down and cutting off diplomatic ties. Anyway...

I think this was a good story. I had fun reading it and I will continue on with it. I think Aquaman is still one of my favorite in the DC wheelhouse. Well, if they don't continue to ruin her character, Wonder Woman is my favorite, but they have messed with her and she's not as shiny, but the movie got her right, to bad the NEW 52 did not.

I can't say Aquaman has ever interested me as a character, but there was a moment in the middle of this book where I thought "you know, Aquaman isn't an interesting superhero but he is an interesting head of state."

Too bad the whole thing fell apart. This has an OK an intro (though I could've done without the writer trying to make me feel guilty for not loving Aquaman), a pretty good middle but a dreadful back third that unfortunately resolves nothing.

This story really felt against the spirit of Rebirth. It also doesn't feel remotely novel given there have been other government vs. superhero and superhero vs. superhero stories lately. Mera ended up coming off like an irrational, impulsive jerk and I *hated* their back and forth over whether they still wanted to get married right in the middle of the United States military trying to kill them.

This book gets a three by the sheer fact that parts of it were good but this is definitely on the lesser end of books I've read, not because Aquaman isn't interesting but because the story was frustrating.

If Super Friends taught us anything it's that Aquaman on land just doesn't make sense. This story was dull and familiar. It ends on an intriguing cliffhanger, but for it to work they need to shift the focus to the sea. I'm not convinced they will.

If they're trying to redeem Aquaman's reputation as anything other than "Conch Boy" then this isn't the way to go. Full of the same old whiney 'nobody takes me seriously' crap that has plagued this character for years. DC need to think outside the box with this character and go somewhere new.
Art is ok, as colourful as you'd expect an Aquaman comic to be, but nothing really stands out.
