1. The art is amazing. I love the swap back and forth between the super realistic and the cute manga/children’s novel style.

2. It’s so informative! I never really even had a clue about Japan’s history before other than some of the Shogun period and around WWII, but this is a whole new world. I wish I could read about all nation’s history in this format.

3. It’s fantastic storytelling. I was hooked from beginning to end

I can’t wait to read the rest :)

This book was more engaging than I thought it might be - half history, half autobiography, beautifully drawn and written. I'm reading the next one now.

Showa 1926 - 1939 is a graphic novel detailing the history of Japan. It is also an autobiography of an artist coming of age in the lead up to WW2. Muzuki juxtaposes photorealistic drawings and prints alongside cartoonish renditions of his childhood misadventures. This was a thoughtful, moving work of art; a meditation on the blind stupidity of war that I thoroughly enjoyed and will definitely read again.

I found it a very entertaining way to learn about history. My only complaints were that at times the parts of the author's life didn't even relate to what was going on in the world, so I felt it distracting, and that there were so many end notes it was annoying to keep flipping to the back to read them when I'm trying to enjoy the book.

An amazing insight into one man's growing up and how the war in China and the beginning of WW2 affected him. The art is excellent as is the writing.

Not a major fan of manga but am a fan of history so I enjoyed the parts that dealt with history and tolerated the parts that didn't (the main character isn't a likable fellow).
Loved some of the parts about Japanese culture - kappa doesn't mean cucumber sushi fans!!
The end notes are useful but a bit of a drag to have to keep going back to them.
