This was a wonderful easy read, following a heroine that is believable in all her shortcomings, and always late to everything. Loved that she's so human.
Also: crimes to solve, people with wings and fur in a well-developed world, complete with dragons and dangers of saying too much.

Really liked it, and will definitely read the sequel.

On the one hand, both the plot and the world created are a bit convoluted and overly mysterious (not in the sense of being mystery, but simply never explained to the reader) for my taste, and I skimmed a lot of descriptors and fight scenes. On the other, I loved all the major characters and really wanted to know what would happen next (and still do - I'll probably start the second one immediately....)

I wouldn't say this book is without its problems, but I enjoyed it a lot and hope the rest of the series is as good.

I unfortunately could not finish this book. No matter how much I tried to get into it (and I read half the book) I cannot seem to immerse myself into this story. As other readers have pointed out, the problem is the writing, there is a large info dump in the first few chapters that makes you feel completely unaware of what is what in this world, nothing is explained really well to make you understand the universe that they live in, and the main character is, I feel, simply there along for the ride as much as we are.

She does not do much for the plot, or the advancement of the investigation other than having the 'markings' that the others seem to have before death. This, unfortunately, does not make a main character integral to the plot. She also seems to be winning people over simply by being sad and afraid... idk, this seems pretty lame to me.

The overall story line is very interesting, and the author was quite creative with the world she built. I would have definitely edited this book a bit more for it to reach its full potential.

I can safely say i am intrigued by these books.

Kaylin is a character i can almost immediately relate with and the the way she thinks and behaves. All of the characters have depth, and flaws, and secrets which makes it such a page-turner!
The world is developed in a fascinating way where you understand the details completely without being overwhelmed by infodumps!

Some bits definitely could be improved with some key plot sections written in a very vague way making making me struggle to understand what was happening.

I am looking forward to reading the next books in the series, however, I am really hoping the plot is still equally as good by book 14 and not disappointingly lacking! Fingers Crossed!!

I read this on audio. I just realized I dont know how to spell the main character's name! Anyway, she was a little annoying at times. Kind of a cliched female lead in that she had the propensity to kick ass, but often dodnt understand what was going on or complained about having to get out of bed or had tantrums. But I did see her grow somewhat throughout the first book.

She works for the Hawks and basically is a knight for hire with them. When children start getting murdered with the same marks she has covering her arms and legs showing up on the bodies, she is sent to investigate, along with Tiamaris, a dragon in his human form, and Severn, her former best friend from her childhood in the fiefs. (I wantes to like Severn, and thought that her trying to kill him a few times was preposterous. After learning what Severn did to break her trust, I dont know that I can forgive the character, and dont want them to have a relationship - which seems to be where the series is heading.)

There are certainly some interesting action scenes, and the world is pretty well thought out and very well established by the end of the first book. But audiobooks tend to reveal characterization problems more easily for me,and this one does have some character issues - they are all either perfect or super-flawed, to the point of seeming almost like caricatures.

Will I continue reading the series?: Yes, but probably in print so that I see if the characters are more appealing that way. plus i'll learn to spell her name!
