This was...unending and repetitive and just kept going.

I really liked Kaylin as a character, and probably would have given the book fewer than 3 stars otherwise. I found it difficult to like any of the male characters. I also felt that the pacing was a little bit off, especially in terms of how long it took to explain the history between Kaylin and Severn. Despite how much I liked Kaylin, I doubt I will continue with the series.

The writing was too confusing to want to continue.

Reread March 2016: I still missed out on some of the plot nuance and how magic works in this series, but I got more out of the story this time around. I also didn't remember it being as funny the first time around so that was a nice surprise.

Really interesting story, characters and world. It was a bit of a struggle for me to read (I know I missed some nuance and plot complexities) so this is not really a true 4-star rating for me. Rounded up from 3.5.

Loved it. Normally, I am wary of full-on fantasy, set in another world with completely different races, but aside from that, everything else in this novel rang true: the characters, the emotions, everything. Also, Michelle Sagara's writing is beautiful.

As an adult/ young adult fantasy series I really enjoy this series. We follow the main character, Kaylin, who lives in the capital city of Elantra. Having spent her childhood struggling to survive on the streets as an orphan, she now uses her street smarts to protect the city as a Hawk. A Hawk is similar to a detective, they right the wrongs throughout the city. But Kaylins dark and twisted past catches up with her when children are ritualistically murdered in her old haunts.

I really enjoy this book due primarily to the characters. I firmly believe good characters make or break a story. And they make it here! Along with having several different species (humans, Arians, Leontines, and Barranni to name a few) they are realistic. Kaylin is far from imperfect. She sucks at studies, she is always late, a very quick temper, and an insatiable curiosity. She is a great character! All the characters are interesting and enjoyable!

The plot was also very riveting. It kept me entertained and excited to read the next book! I really do suggest this series if you want a good fantasy series!

It has been a while since I read a fantasy book like this, I really enjoyed it!

I tried, I can’t do it. The sentences are so choppy and badly written. She’s not using double negatives, but the way the sentences are written I can’t tell what exactly she means a lot of the time. I have too much on my TBR pile to continue here. Concept might have been decent, but I can’t get past the poor sentence structure.

this book was pretty good, but fairly non-linear. I'm used to my heroines knowing a little bit more of what is happening or even what they are going to do. I enjoyed the world very much but! at the vern end of the book, like, even on the LAST PAGE of the last chapter - there was a "but our heroine must do xyz! look for the next book in 2006!" WHO DOES THIS!?

I'm sure it was just me, but this book was weird. I felt lost and confused through basically the entire book yet somehow enjoyed it? I think I like the ideas in the book, and I'll definitely try to read the second one to see if it was just first book awkwardness. *fingers crossed*
