all i'm saying is i guessed who jack the ripper was less than 100 pages in
Wasn't a bad book. weirdly, I found myself often bored? all in all a decent mystery. the person who was the killer was a surprise for me.
Audrey Rose comes from a wealthy family and should act a certain way because of this, but she is much smarter and more curious than most girls her age. She would rather help her uncle with autopsies in his lab, then attend tea parties. But by participating in these more gruesome activities, she is pulled into investigating a serial killer, which also puts her own life in danger.
Of course being set in the 1880’s there is a lot of sexism, but that is how it was back then, so it fit with the story. There is quite a bit of gore, don’t start the book while eating like I did! There are some slow parts, but it keeps you guessing until the end and I can’t wait to read more of the series!

Premettendo che questo libro non è esattamente il mio genere preferito, non l'ho trovato eccessivamente noioso.
Ci sono dei punti che dovrebbero essere migliorati nei libri successivi.
Primo fra tutti la quantità di volte che la protagonista fa "pensare" al lettore l'avversione che la società prova verso le sue passioni. In alcuni momenti l'ho trovato eccessivamente ripetitivo e, in altri casi, a volte rispecchiava l'atteggiamento di una bambina che frigna davanti al rifiuto del genitore di comprarle un dolcetto.
Sia ben chiaro che Audrie Rose ha tutti i diritti di "lamentarsi" di come la società la tratta, perché i suoi interessi sono focalizzati su altro che non sia omicidi, squartamenti e cadaveri. Nel '800 questo era visto in modo assai negativo e per tutta la lettura, ho sempre appoggiato la voglia di ribellione che Audrie esprimeva verso suo padre e suo fratello, che non volevano che lei macchiasse la sua reputazione di giovane ragazza dell'alta società londinese.
Però a volte era esageratamente rompiscatole e lagnona.
Un altra pecca di questo libro è incentro sugli indizi che venivano forniti per scoprire chi fosse Jack the Reaper. Premettendo che non sono un amante dei libri gialli, ma apprezzo molto le serie tv poliziesche, non è stato difficile scoprire chi fosse verso la metà del libro, questo mi fatto passare un po' la lettura.
Questa lettura merita se si è appassionati dal genere e si vuole iniziare a intraprendere una carriera letteraria nell'inglese che ha un livello medio.
Però vorrei aggiungere che questo libro no mi ha coinvolto tanto a livello di chimica dei personaggi e mi ha fatto solo venire voglia di rileggere per la centesima volta Black Friars ... MANNAGGIA!

It's a mystery that will continue to haunt the history books. The curiosity will never fade though and in Kerri Maniscalco's Stalking Jack the Ripper, Audrey Rose Wadsworth takes her turn at solving the case. With a worried family, mentor uncle, and an interesting young man in tow, will she be able to make a difference?
Audrey Rose Wadsworth thrilled and surprised me from start to finish. She's independent and outspoken in a society that prefers women demure and unassuming. She goes against her father's wishes, spends most of her time covered in gore, yet still enjoys the finer things like clothing and appearance. The dynamic between her and Thomas Cresswell, an attractive young man working with her uncle, is very Holmes/Watson, filled with scientific questioning and witty banter. I loved it!!!
As someone who watched a ton of crime shows in my teenage years, it's wonderful that this YA novel is tackling forensic science and medicine! Right from the start we see Audrey learning her craft; making incisions, taking samples, and studying dead bodies. Blood, guts, gore, and all. It's so refreshing to see the gritty details of it play out on the page. Even the research behind it, chronicling and experimenting to make discoveries. I'm totally here for scientific ladies!
At the heart of it all is, of course, Jack the Ripper, the Whitechapel murders, and Victorian London. Grisly murders with so much mystery surrounding them taking place in the seedy underbelly of a burgeoning city. It's perfect for a creepy narrative filled with twists and turns. Maniscalco weaves her characters into the very heart of the case, attempting to assist the investigation and help discover the perpetrator. The stakes are high and the danger feels very real.
Overall Stalking Jack the Ripper is an excellent debut for Kerri Maniscalco and a brilliant start for a series. With lively characters like Audrey and Thomas and a unique focus on early forensic science and medicine, this story will pull the reader in right from the beginning. Plus the Ripper investigation makes for a perfect mix of fact and fiction that sets the tone. I absolutely loved this story and hope readers pick it up far and wide!
