This is exactly the kind of book about the body I Iike to read. Entertaining, good coverage of the topic for a lay person, doesn't get stuck in technical details.
Had to knock off half a star for this line: "Always use plastic chopping boards because they are easier to clean properly and provide fewer grooves and ridges for bacteria to hide in."
This is the opposite of true. Plastic gets cuts and grooves in it. Wood and bamboo are the recommended materials for hygienic food prep. It's always disturbing when you're new to a subject and the person you're trusting to inform you gets something dead wrong on a topic you are informed about.

Des plus informatifs, bourré d'humour et d'empathie, cet ouvrage est le nec plus ultra de la vulgarisation scientifique et médicale. Un régal que j'ai pris soin de faire durer, trop heureuse de le retrouver à chacune de mes pauses. Si seulement l'auteure pouvait se pencher sur d'autres sujets avec la même verve !

Til forskjelk fra andre bøker om tarmen som jeg opplevd som vanskelige og for tekniske er denne boken mer folkelig, enkel og leken. Kanskje for leken. For Enders bruker en barnslig humor og liknelser som irriterer meg mye; det går an å skrive bøker med et folkelig språk uten å få det å virke som en barnebok! Men selv om hennes beskrivelser irriterer meg så handlr det til syvende og sist om hvis jeg fikk lært noe når jeg leste boken, det som er mitt formål med å lese alle disse bøkene om tarmen. Og da må jeg vel si at ja, jeg har lært noe, selv om jeg stundevis ikke følte det da jeg bare var så irritert på Enders pedagogikk. Jeg satte stort pris på beskrivelsen av fordøyelsessystemet som er det mest informative jeg lest i noen tarm-bok. Å få vite hvordan tarmen fungerer og hvor viktige bakteriene er i fordøyelsesjobben forklarer virkelig hvorfor "kalori in, kalori ut" - argumentene er tull og viser hvordan alt sen henger sammen med tarmen, inflammasjoner, hjernen, psyket, og resten av kroppen. Visste du for eksempel at tarmbakteriene bestemme hvilken blodtype vi utvikler?
Ja, det var alt i alt en god bok, den beste av dem jeg lest skulle jeg nok si. Jeg føler at jeg skjønt mye og at jeg bedre skjønner hvis og hvordan jeg kan påvirke min tarmhelse til det bedre. Og med dette så avslutter jeg denne min "fordypelse i tarmen" - perioden og går videre for å lære om noe annet i stedet.

I was equal parts fascinated, grossed out, and overwhelmed with this book. The science and balance of our gut is such a delicate matter and one that effects so much of our well being. Ultimately, I feel inspired to take a renewed look at my gut health and am ready to apply what I learned.

I read it once this summer to have my insides turned out so I could better understand and 'see' what's there. I will read it a second time to cement my understanding and consider - for a second time - how best to incorporate new knowledge about my body into my eating habits.
It helps that this summer I also watched the documentary Forks Over Knives, and prior to viewing had borrowed the cookbook of the same name from our library and also downloaded the free app. It helps that our older son has been vegan for close to 10 years. It helps that my eating habits have changed, partially due to my own efforts and partially because that same son and his family have been living with us for the past year, and I have seen the positive impact on my cholesterol levels due to the changes.

It accomplishes its primary objective (informing you about the gut) with an easy to understand style, really helping the points stick in my head. The examples are over simplified, but considering the audience, they seemed appropriate.
More important than the style, the content is absolutely intriguing (I may be biased by my biology love). I learned all sorts of new things and a greater understanding of many others.
Absolutely worth reading.

This was my second read through and it's as good as I remember. It covers the basic functionality of every part of your digestive tract and the importance of your gut flora.
