If you’re a fan of mountaineering, with some background knowledge of what crampon, belay, and serac mean, I’d go ahead and recommend picking up Breathless. Likewise if you’re happy to Google a word or two for the sake of an immersive, descriptive setting, give it a shot.

But if you’re looking for a real thriller that will keep you guessing, this isn’t it.

Personally, I’m a sucker for a good mountaineering documentary and loved watching Nims Purba’s Project Possible (partly what inspired this book, as the author summited Manaslu with Nims!) so when I came across this book as a BOTM pick, I had to get it.

I could poke at specifics on dialogue choice and pacing, but it was a quick enjoyable read. While it wasn’t very thrilling and the reveals weren’t particularly revealing… I still enjoyed the journey. If it wasn’t for the Himalayan setting however, I’d have rated this 3 stars.

Ughhhh!!!! Soooo this book was really hard for me to get through. The premise was amazing but it wasn’t as well done as I would have liked. It was super slow to build up to any type of suspense or anything thrilling and I figured out who the killer was sooooo early on in the book that I only really finished it to make sure I was right (which I was) lol. All in all I just wish it was a bit more exciting and dangerous and less clinical and predictable!!

The concept for this was really interesting, and the in depth exploration of mountain climbing as well as the idea of being stuck on a mountain with a killer really kept me reading, but the murder mystery itself was very predictable and much of the murder aspects I saw coming from a mile away. Overall pretty entertaining though! And I think the fact that the author actually summited the peak she’s writing about really adds to the immersion and the detail.

Cecily Wong has managed to snag an extremely sought after interview with a famous climber, Charles McVeigh. But there is a catch before he gives the interview. Cecily must summit the mountain with him. She has climbed before, but is not extremely experienced. Despite that she takes the gamble.

Cecily gives up basically everything to get this interview - she drained her savings, lost her boyfriend, and may lose her mind before the trip is over. Once they arrive at the mountain, she discovers she has far more to deal with when several freak accidents happen. Cecily wonders what is going on - is there a murderer among them? She's stranded on this mountain, unable to get contact with the outside world (although she was told she would be able to reach her employer to send updates) and now she has to deal with the elements and possibly a killer on the loose.

This book captivated me. It got pretty technical about climbing and, while I know exactly nothing about climbing, it kept me interested and engaged even during the technical parts.

This story was chilling and I don't just mean the weather. The author created a great atmosphere in describing the mountain and the events occurring, and it made you feel a part of the story. I was on the edge of my seat until the end. Definitely will check out more from this author!
