I struggled for awhile deciding what to rate this book, but I feel like a 3 is appropriate. I wanted to love this story so badly, I couldn’t wait to get my hands on it. While it’s one that’s worth a read, it just felt lacking at times. I found Cecily to be annoying and immature. She didn’t know when to quit or when to bite her tongue. Even the ending left me frustrated seeing as we didn’t get to truly see what became of Charles and his reputation. Overall, I don’t regret reading this book. It’s just not one I’d recommend to people who aren’t “hard core” readers. If it’s gonna be one of five books you read this year, I’d take it off the list and find a better one.

The first 300 or so pages of this book were some strange combination of self-help and crazy mountaineering cult memoir. It was repetitive: we climbed, it was cold, we sat in a tent, we climbed, it was cold, we sat in a tent. Only the last 50ish pages were actually thrilling and those were super rushed. I didn't find 'mystery' throughout the book very compelling, and I hated the way the MC allowed herself to be treated. Some of the men on the expedition spoke to her like she was an irritating child. And not only does she not call them on it, but she doesn't even have a mental conversation with herself about how they shouldn't speak to her that way. I just kept waiting for her to stand up for herself.
