My Review

If you take The Craft, The Secret Circle and add a dash of Mean girls you have The Dolls. Going into this book I wasn't sure what to expect but what I got was a pretty good read that kept my interest and I had a serious love hate relationship with some of the characters.
Eveny Cheval has been living with her Aunt Bea in NY since her mom passed away when she was younger. Having lived away from her family home for so long her Aunt thought it would be a good time for her to return to her family home in Carrefours Louisanna. The Town isn't what you except and the people are even worse. Something strange is going on and people are turning up dead, Eveny will soon need the help of the two most popular girls Peregrine and Chloe the "Mean Girls" in the school to help her find out what's going on before it's to late for all of them.

I honestly loved this book. I HATED Peregrine, like 100% hated her. I think I was supposed to but even if I wasn’t I still did. I really adored Eveny and Chloe. Chloe was like the middle person always getting in front of Peregrine when she got a little nasty or out of control.

The world build wasn’t to bad, I would have liked a little more explanation about Carrefours and the Main De Lumiére but it was easy enough to understand who they were and what they wanted. I loved the story, I found it to be very interesting and at the story unfolded I really got into all the twists and turn of who was good and who was out to get our Main Character. I was totally wrong a few times. Lol.

I gave The Dolls by Kiki Sullivan 4/5 stars, This was a great story with some really awesome characters, some I loved and some I hated. I recommend for anyone that is looking for a mix of Magic and Mean HS Girl. This is really a fun book to read :)

What can I say except I loved it! I lived it so much. From the beginning til the end! This mix of teenage life and magic, so explosive! And the end, oh it makes me so frustrated, I want more !!! Can't wait to read the next book, hope it'll be released soon !!!

Most of the characters were shallow and quite entitled to the point where I wished I could reach across the pages and slap them (sheesh ladies!). I guess that is what happens wen you mix unattended teenagers and magic, huh?! The Dolls was still an enjoyable, quick, mindless read. Could've read it in one sitting were it not for the need of groceries.

I felt the main character wasn't as defined as the others. Eveny was the only character I couldn't picture in my head at all. I could picture Peregrine, Chloe, Pascal, and Caleb just fine....just not Eveny.

The romance was blah in my opinion. Felt forced....even at the end.

After spending most of her childhood in New York, Eveny Cheval and her aunt Bea are moving back to Carrefour, Louisiana. Neither has been back since the suicide of Eveny's mother fourteen years ago. Eveny soon finds out that despite Carrefour's beauty, there's a darkness lurking and she's right in the middle of it. The Dolls, a group of popular kids at school, are kids Eveny instantly doesn't like or trust, but she will need their help if she wants to know the truth about who she really is, her past, her family, and find out who murdered a girl and who they might be after next.

This book ended up being a fairly quick read even though it was almost 400 pages long. It had an interesting concept and a Gothic setting that I enjoyed. It didn't feel as Southern as I expected but with the town being basically cut off from everything else, it wasn't something that was completely unbelievable.

The characters, especially The Dolls, were pretty shallow and self-centered but in a way that was oddly understandable after we met the mothers of the two main Dolls, Peregrine and Chloe. Eveny was an interesting character, though sometimes it felt like her voice was being overwhelmed by the mystery of the town and the strong opinions of those around her, which may have been intentional.

There was a pretty bad case of insta-love. That was disappointing since I do think there could have been a really nice build up between Eveny and the boy but it just went way too fast to have time to enjoy it.

I did like the magic mythology involved in the book, especially that there were consequences for the magic that was cast. The big mystery of the murder was unfortunately predictable and that took some enjoyment away from the last part of the book. It meant no big jaw-dropping finale that I look forward to when reading anything with a mystery.

Even with the predictability and insta-love, the concept was enough to have me interested in seeing where the series goes next.

*I received a copy of this book from the publisher in exchange for an honest review.

Paranormal fantasy isn't exactly what I like, the only paranormal fantasy I actually like are the ones with vampires and werewolves and even then I don't read that many books with supernatural characters. This book just wasn't my cup of tea. I still did enjoy it though, more towards the end.

I don't know why I have such disdain for recent YA attempts at voodoo novels, but boy howdy, this is not the one to change my mind.

1) The small town in Louisiana has a high wall around the entire town, with a locked gate which you need a key in order to enter. Say what now? Even if you are a young person who has spent their entire lives in Brooklyn, I find it impossible to believe that you would think that was ok/normal. How do people commute outside their community? How do they get supply shipments? Wacky.

2) Eveny is not particularly freaked out at moving across the country on 2 days notice, followed by her aunt bascially completely disappearing from her life. Really?

3) I'm glad Eveny thinks that the other Queen's misuse of power is appalling. I'm appalled that they couldn't come up with something more interesting to do with it than collect fashionable shoes and cars and drink cocktails at lunch.

Just meh. Really, really meh.

I seem to be really really good at finding fluffy books to read in between the good ones. This was one of those books. It was like a supernatural Mean Girls with some weird Louisiana voodoo flavour. Really not the best written book in the world and all the characters were super underdeveloped - HA! (they are all 17ish) but it was a quick an fun read for sure.

I'm done already! I read it in less than a day because I couldn't put the book down. I LOVED it! I can't wait for the second book!!!! The Dolls is just a FUN FUN FUN read. From the beginning of the book I was intrigued and desperate for answers to questions. Like, why do you have to have a key to get into the town? Ok, but what REALLY happened to her mother? What kind of magic are they using? I just had to keep reading! I do have to say though I guessed the bad guy VERY early into the book. I think most people will guess the bad guy very early on as well. However, I don't feel like it spoiled the book any. There were still questions and interesting things happening that kept me entertained until the end. Overall the book has a great eerie atmosphere, fun characters, unique take on magic, and a fast paced plot. 5 stars!!
