So You Want to be President By Judith St. George was very interesting. I chose it for the informational category. I actually enjoyed the facts and the interesting information within this story. I am not much in to politics but some of the facts were pretty interesting. I didn't really like the illustrations very much, but then I am not a huge fan of caricature drawings. The whole big head, small body has always been different for me. But I could see how the drawings, which have a lot of character to them, were seen to be the best illustrated of that year.

This nonfiction book presents history (yawn, boring) with facts about real people that are funny, embarrassing, and not often what I'd want repeated about me after I pass (hm, interesting). The book moves through basic facts about the presidency by relating to kids (so YOU think you want to be president?) and shares fun facts in a way that's, well, actually fun. The illustrations that accompany the book are cartoon-style and show the emotions and exaggerations of the president's live. They seem like a colorful bunch of people (who knew that William Howard Taft needed a special bathub?). For kids learning about the American government this book is a fun, non-political way to engage them.

The art is superb, but otherwise the book is scattered. It's trying to tell the mini-bios of all the presidents, pointing out that every sort of person had been a president. Except for a person of color (at the time of the book's writing) or a woman. This book is titled "So You Want to Be President" and it tries to show good presidential qualities. A better organization and a theme would have gone a long way to create a narrative out of this disjointed text. The illustrations go far to help, but the writing is simplistic and dull.

This is an informative albeit simplistic book about our Presidents. Unfortunately it is unavoidably out-of-date already. Yet it should likely remain a useful teaching tool for young children especially because the drawings are quite fun. Good luck explaining Clinton's impeachment.

Great information about all our of Presidents, for a PG audience. ;) Fun caricature illustrations! A little dry on the story line but useful for teaching children, young and old about the U.S.A.

A little disappointed that my favorite 2 didn't get much play in the book.
