Why the FUCK is her mom such a bitch!?!?! I just want to scream why her mother is constantly belittling her for her weight and her siblings are just as bad. Then, they’re at a restaurant and a little kid calls her fat and the dad high fives him?! This book just broke my heart. How could a whole world of people make a twelve year old girl feel like this?

This is a must-read for anyone. I was going to Put a caveat on that…I was going pick the type of bodies who should read this book, or the type of children of the type of mothers, or the type of students being bullied a certain kind of way… But then I realized the other types of bodies should read it, as should the bullying moms and the bullying students. Really anyone who has ever been or interacted with a fat person should read this book. It is a very difficult read however. And if you do have scars from being bullied for your weight as a child this book might open up old wounds. But I loved it dearly.

I love how well-done this book was but hate that I and so many other people relate to it and have lived similar stories. Will be thinking about this book for a while.

Fipps does not shy from difficult themes. Her second book tackles child poverty and this one is about an obese middle school who is tortured by her family, classmates, and society because of her weight. (The author states that many of these were her own personal experiences.) It was so hard reading about the cruelty from her mother and my heart broke when the character stated, "I felt as though my mom would only love me if I was thin". I could not relate to some of the horrible experiences but definitely felt the shame my weight caused my own mother. The entire book is told in prose and her friends, Liv and Catalina, her therapist, English teacher, school librarian, and her father provide some light to the novel. I recommend this book to anyone who is struggling with their self-image or is bullied for whom they are.
I loved this! I loved Ellie. I loved her finding her voice and her love for herself. I liked her friends. I did not like her mom or her brother. This was such a strong debut for Fipps.

This book lives up to the hype in every way. I'm so glad we bought a set of these for a lit group this year. This was heartbreaking and uplifting and empowering all at the same time. I laughed, I cried, I mentally cheered on Ellie as she learned to accept herself and stand up to her bullies. All I can say is wow... read this one.
This middle grade book was recommended on Currently Reading podcast. It would be a great book for a middle grade person. It’s a great “own-voices” book for a kid (especially a girl) who is being bullied for size. As a mom I couldn’t get past the horrible mother and the lack of adult support at the school. It didn’t make sense to me why you would allow your daughter to be treated like that. Why wouldn’t you remove her from that school?!
