Once I convinced myself to completely suspend my disbelief that Mitch McDeere went from where he was at the end of The Firm to where he is at the beginning of The Exchange, I thought I could enjoy it. Alas, no. The people are hard to keep track of and the entire book is just going around to different people/agencies/governments to ask for money to get the hostage back. And then - what a ripoff- you don’t even find out who took the hostage at the end! The Firm was so good and this “sequel” ruined it. Grisham should have just let The Firm be as it was. :(
Very disappointed in this book. Fifteen years after “The Firm,” Mitch and Abby are rich, white, privileged New Yorkers interested only in nice restaurants, expensive travel, $55,000 per year private schools for their young children, etc. Mitch’s cases are huge corporate lawsuits. Plus the story leaves so many loose ends. Early on he is assigned a death penalty case, goes to visit the storefront lawyer, but then the case and lawyer are never mentioned again. What was the point? The terrorist kidnapping plot in Libya has people who know everything about his family, his past, his movements, etc with no explanation of how they have this knowledge. The kidnappers win, still with no knowledge of how they, supposedly rural and unsophisticated, pull this off. Very little closure to the book.
I agree with the other reviews which state that it isn't necessary to read The Firm first although it doesn't reference back to that story.
I really liked the slow lead up to the kidnapping happening especially with Mitch being forced to going back to Tennessee for another death row inmate case but he came to late. I also enjoyed the setup of where everyone was convinced Libya was relatively safe but had a security detail as well.
The description of the kidnappers action was so detailed it was easy to tell how violent they were and weren't afraid to publicize it at all. At the end, I was definitely nervous they wouldn't take the 85 million for the release of Giovanni Sadroni. I liked all the moving points of finding different means of contact to meet the ransom request. I liked how the kidnappers knew enough to force Mitch back to the Cayman Islands where there were already unpleasant memories.

This is not a good book. It is boring and nothing happens. Fun revisiting these characters but what was the point? very disappointing. Thanks to NetGalley ad the publisher for the free copy in exchange for my honest review.

one of his best
I was not expecting so much adventure! This could easily be the start of a sequel or perhaps series. The king of bad endings didn’t do too badly.

I have to admit I was disappointed by this book. I reread The Firm in anticipation of this new book coming out and was reminded of how much I loved The Firm. To me this book was boring and uninteresting. I was not invested in the plot or the characters in the way I was with The Firm.
