This is a reversion to his original style. Very nice.

I picked this book up from an airport to kill a six hour flight and frankly, it did its job. I never read the first, but the book does a decent job of existing without relying on the previous work. It’s a bit dense at times and the thrilling aspects are fairly well written. I don’t regret reading it, but it wouldn’t be something I’d pick up for anything other than a distraction.

When I saw there was a sequel to The Firm, I couldn’t wait to get my hands on it and put away all other book plans! Sadly, this was a big disappointment

This book feels like John Grisham wrote it while he was asleep. There are long passages of author narrative (telling, not showing), and when the vapid, faceless characters are occasionally awakened, they stumble through stale scenes uttering trite, predictable dialogue.

In his prime, Grisham was one of my favorite novelists. But maybe it's time for the great man to retire.

Two stars may be harsh, but I think it is fair based off the promise a sequel to The Firm promises. After reading, I would not consider The Exchange a sequel to the firm. Mitch is the main character and past events are occasionally referenced but it is not a follow up to that story in any way but for very minor plot points. The book seemed to me a story that Patterson had concocted and thought, "Hey, what if I add in a few references here and there, make a small segway into Memphis, and change this into a follow-up to The Firm". It's not a terrible book but calling it a sequel makes it give promises it can't deliver. The story itself is mediocre and not very exciting. Ultimately a let down.

Not Grishem’s best book but still a good summer read. Who can resist catching up with Mitch and Abby McDeere in their life after the Firm?
