Not my favourite and I’m thoroughly disappointed

Edit: I was in a pissy mood when I reviewed this book, bumping up the two stars to three, I might re-write this entire review (though I do agree with all my points, I just want to write them in a less angry way) because I did enjoy the writing and the setting of the book, and I can’t fault the change in theme (from a child friendly book to a dark one) as it did add more of a fanciful quality to the story

- all the characters lost their appeal for me, most made really atrocious decisions that I could see going bad from a mile away. The characters developed but I just can’t stand any of them, they are all so pitiful and disappointing
- the romance was way too weird, I get meggie is more “grown up” in this book because of the trails she faced, but she is still 13 so it’s just unsettling for me
- there did not need to be a second book and so the plot was very “thrown together” and I got lost and confused on many occasions
- I can’t let slide the terminology used to describe the black prince. “I missed his black face” and “my black friend” because if you didn’t guess, he has dark skin, but saying it this way made me feel a bit ill
- the pacing was agonisingly slow, it was such a long book unnecessarily
- at the start of the book, Funke states that she didn’t intend to write a dulogy, let alone a trilogy, and it is very evident, as the plot is just haphazard

⚠️Spoilers⚠️

Meggie pissed me off from the get go. She was so whinny and such a baby. I seriously can’t believe she read herself into the book. What a self centred asshole. I don’t care what you say, that was a stupid decision and she knew how much she would hurt her father and mother by doing so. She continued to annoy me the rest of the story. The ending pissed me off the most. She dosent give a shit about her dad. She knows he wouldn’t want to stay. HE NEARLY DIED! I just don’t understand. I get it that funke is trying to emphasise the appeal of inkworld, but I see no appeal. I see death and war and destruction. Just go back home!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I can’t believe there is another massive book, what the hell.

Fraig (or however you spell it) annoying brat. I know he had redeeming traits and I can understand why people like him. But I don’t.

The weird ass love triangle between dustfinger, risa, roxane and mo?????? This shit was creepy. I hated dustfinger in this. How had we never heard of his children and wife (that he apparently so desperately loves) in book one? Because funke made them up for this one. Dustfinger was stuck in the world for ten years AND HE DOES NOT MENTION HIS WIFE OMCE! INSTEAD HE TRIES TO STEAL MO’S wIFE???? Don’t like him

I only liked mo, but I get the feeling I’m gonna like him less in the next book

The writer of inkheart (in the book, can’t spell his name, starts with f) is also a whinny brat. Just wanting everything to work out his way and that’s it!

Maybe I’m in a bad mood but I can’t with this book, I’m dreading reading the next one, but I’m praying it’s better

Actually more like 4.5 stars, but I’m rounding up because this is one of my favourite stories of all time.

That said, this book definitely drags in some points. It’s hard to write a book with so many different characters and then keep every single storyline as interesting as one another. I was glad that this book seemed to focus more on Dustfinger and Farid because their relationship is so cute (much cuter than Farid’s and Meggie’s…) and I feel like we get a lot of emotion out of those two characters.

Another strong point of this story is the Inkworld setting. It is truly a beautiful fairytale like world, that draws you in not only with its beauty but also with its harsh laws and cruel rulers.

I was originally going to give this book 4 stars, but I was completely shook by the ending so I bumped it up to 4.5. I need to read the next book immediately!

Not as good as Inkheart. It took such a long time and effort to finish this book. There were more explanations than story. It was like reading a long essay that was so tiresome and boring. The story was not that bad but unwanted explanations made it really boring. Meggie, who is just 13, is shown to behave as a girl of 18.She is brave and all but love life for a 13 year old is a little absurd. The Wayless Wood seemed to be wonderful. The fairies, fire elves, nightmares, white women and all the strange creatures were interesting to read about. Dustfinger was the hero of the book but among so many characters, he somehow disappeared. There are so many characters in this book that it's hard to remember them all. Many bad things kept happening in the book. It was like every time, bad people won over good people. I thought the Inkworld trilogy was supposed to be like a children story, warm and happy, but this book shattered all those things I thought about it. Well, lets see what the third book brings... Hope it has a happy ending!
