I enjoyed the Netflix series for the most part but I LOVE THIS BOOK. It's darker, more serious, and more direct in its critique of sexism and racism. Wan really doesn't hold back. This would be a great read for first-gen students in their second or third year. Also, yay for Asian American representation!

As a female lawyer I could relate to so much of this book. The ending made me so happy, which is rare from a book.

I read this after watching the Netflix version of the book. And the two seem to be so different. I think Ingrid is a better person in the book, and her struggles as an Asian American woman come off the page with more emotions than in the show. I do recommend both though!

Really enjoyed this! It’s very different from the Netflix show- which is what lead me to the book- but I ended up liking the book’s plot a lot more! The two are really nothing alike. None of the characters are similar to their counterparts, but there are definitely a few parts (very few) in the book that carried over to the show.
I was worried that there would be too much legal jargon, but the author made it very easy to understand. The show seemed to focus much more on romance than the race and gender aspect of Ingrid’s experience.
My anger built up along with Ingrid’s and I wanted to scream at several parts during the book. I liked the ending a lot and would absolutely read another book by this author.

It was hard to say why I didn’t quite love the book. Maybe I didn’t like Ingrid sometimes or maybe I didn’t like the ways in which she was similar to me? I felt like the book risks sounding a bit performative at times as well. However, I liked the story of the young Chinese lawyer at a firm because it reminded me of my mother and me.
