Enjoyed this one a lot, however I found that my understanding was heightened after reading chapter synopses following the completion of a chapter. The author’s prose and lack of punctuation can make comprehension difficult/slow-going at times.

One of the most unsettling books I’ve read in my short journey so far. Has a way of getting under your skin, to the point I still think of lines from it months after reading. At certain points seems to revel in the bloody horror a bit too much, but not to the point of being excessive. The character of Judge Holden is one to behold, as he takes a place in one of the greatest villains in fiction, not because of his horrible acts entirely, but because of why he does them, how he justifies them, and just the mystery of who he truly is.

Read this due to a friend's recommendation, and I loved McCarthy's "The Road", so I gave it a shot.
It is pretty gruesome, but I could deal with the gore and all. I found The Kid/The Man's character the most fascinating and appealing to me, so how he refuses to step up against the dark and dies at the Judge's hands was heartbreaking to me more than anything.

I also thought it was really interesting to see themes in "Blood Meridian" that I also saw in "The Road". The same goes for symbolism, like the fire. I've heard that McCarthy has a tendency to connect and develop themes across his novels, so it was interesting to see and compare the two.

Honestly I do want to try reading this again in the future when I have more brain power available. It is just a very dense book, full of a lot of dark subject matter, and therefore takes a lot of focus to read.
