3rd of 4 in this mini series. It seemed to be faster paced that the last two and I enjoyed it more. looking forward to the conclusion when I can get the last book

Ah this is what you want in one of Terry Brooks' Shannara books!
(That rhymes!)
A beautiful, yet talented and surprisingly realistic, heroine, magic, monsters, trickery, adventure and eating bread and cheese which is like the only thing adventurers ever eat!
Must be good cheese...

But this is a great story and my second favourite of this particular foursome!
I recommend reading them in order, but since I read this one first, meh, as long as you're on the ball, you'll do just fine!

The best of the Heritage of Shannara series so far, and it is entirely to do with the main character. Wren is not as crushingly dull as Par, and she is far less whiny than Walker. Without the endless pages of repetitive angst (there is some, but nowhere near the same amount) the pace of Elf Queen is a lot zippier than its predecessors. There's more action and less complaining, and the book seems shorter and tighter because of it.

While this was better than [b:The Wishsong of Shannara|15567|The Wishsong of Shannara (The Original Shannara Trilogy, #3)|Terry Brooks|https://images.gr-assets.com/books/1328325115s/15567.jpg|1352033], it wasn't that great. In fact out of this quartet, it's the weakest so far. (Although [b:The Druid of Shannara|15568|The Druid of Shannara (Heritage of Shannara, #2)|Terry Brooks|https://images.gr-assets.com/books/1390260857s/15568.jpg|34897] was really intense so it's hard to follow that with something good.) Wren is kind of like Brin Ohmsford 2.0. Though she is less useless so that's good. (Less pages of her wondering if she should use magic or not thank goodness.)

This story just didn't have the build up that the previous two did.
There was a lot of death, but it didn't affect me that much because I felt like I didn't really have a chance to get connected to the characters. Even Garth's death was kind of like "oh that's nice, no biggie."
I mean stuff happens but I never really felt the same sense of danger that I did with previous installments.

Despite the disappointment of this book, I am excited to see how everything concludes in the last one.

Once again Terry Brooks comes up with a unique storyline, for a unique world, but ends up boring the reader to death with minutia. The previous book, The Druid of Shannara, had the same issue as this one. The fourth book cannot happen, unless Wren succeeds on her quest. So this entire book has basically been rendered useless with the way Brooks has set the series up. There are small surprises here and there, and there is actually quite a death toll in this one, but every death that could mean something is basically just glazed over to focus on fears about the quest itself. We have spent far too many pages in "The Heritage of Shannara" hemming and hawing with the characters over what to do, when we could just be focusing on other things. I'm hoping the last book in the series brings back some of the brightness that the original series had and the first book in this series started us out with.
