I'm not in the right emotional state to get past the few chapters of this book. Most of the Murrays are HORRIBLE people (except for Laura and Jimmy), Elizabeth is the worst of them with Ruth coming a very close second and Douglas Starr's death was too much for me. DNF.
Graphic: Emotional abuse, Grief, Death of parent
Minor: Ableism
Absolutely love LM Montgomery. But seriously, what is the deal with Dean Priest? Whyyyyy??
Of course I loved Anne, but Emily was always my favorite.
slow-paced
Started out well, but it didn't keep my attention all the way. It was very slow at times, with quite a threadbare plot - I almost did not finish. I enjoyed the beautiful descriptions of nature. Overall, not as good as Anne of Green Gables
I did enjoy this book, but somehow Emily has not taken up a place in my heart in the same way as Anne Shirley. Perhaps it is because she is not so funny as Anne, perhaps it is because the series as a whole is darker than the Anne books, perhaps I have just read too much LMM in one go. Difficult to know, but nonetheless it is still a very good book and I would recommend it for readers of all ages.
On my second reading, i am finding this book too pious, and twee. Emily is a prig and a snob, and the Anne books have more funny gossip and side characters.
Orphan Emily is taken in by two maiden aunts and an uncle, one of the aunts is harsh and cold, the other relations are kind, but none of them understand her sensitive nature. Emily yearns to be a poet.

First time reading this aloud to my girls. I can't remember the last time I read it for myself (whenever it was, it was before I started keeping a list on Goodreads).
I don't understand why Anne gets all the attention; Emily is a well-drawn, lovable, loyal, and spirited heroine in her own right. (So, powers that be, STOP adapting Anne and get on to some of Montgomery's other works. I love Anne too, but there are so many other great stories!)
Montgomery does get carried away with poetic descriptions and adjectives sometimes, but that's part of what makes her the author she is. This one is a little darker than the early Anne stories, with characters that have a little more "history" and some deeper hurts, but the four kids - Emily, Teddy, Perry, and Ilse along with the trio of adults, Aunt Elizabeth, Aunt Laura, and Cousin Jimmy, - make this a moving story of friendship, understanding, and pursuing what we were created to be and do.

Incredibly reminiscent of Anne in style and plot, but Emily still holds her own. Lovely, nostalgic, poetic, and inspiring.
I wish I could have enjoyed it more. It is the less superior version of Anne of Green Gables. Because the scene and storyline we so very similar Emily paled in comparison and I found myself wondering if the author was incapable of writing anything but these young girls who are prone to melodramatics and writing. There was too much internal dialogue with Emily's journaling. Too man same events like the "lost" jewelry and the best friend drama, the stern caretaker, the "saved by the boy" bull story. The same offensive language that got Emily into trouble just like Anne, the understanding grown man househand. I found myself getting annoyed by what appeared to be the same retelling of Anne of Green Gables with just different names.
Making a 3 instead of 2 because there are some endearing quotable quotes that are unique to Emily.
