This book is very silly. It is full of silly characters, with silly dialogue, and a silly plotline. But sometimes...silly is good. Sometimes, it's even great. And I think, this book has the kind of silly that we all can enjoy.
I'm not arguing the fact that this book is not one with a large amount of literary merit. But if you turn your nose up at it and the hundreds of readers who have enjoyed it, then I don't have time for you. It's just enjoyable. It's funny and absurd, and it lightens up your day. If you are looking for something to put you into a good mood, this is the book for you.
Rebecca Bloomwood has a problem. Although she writes for financial newspapers, she herself can't seem to manage any of her money. She's flat broke and has a spending problem.
So I buy it. The most perfect little cardigan in the world. People will call me the Girl in the Gray Cardigan. I’ll be able to live in it. Really, it’s an investment.
But she's still utterly likable. She's absolutely hilarious and her internal commentary on her friends and family is perfect. I loved her voice and her way of looking at the world. She had a confidence that was slightly shaken throughout the book, but she realizes that she is more than just a girl who likes shopping. She was utterly naive at times, but also fresh and funny.
My parents watch too many soap operas, that's their trouble. In fact, they were probably hoping I was pregnant. By my wicked married lover whom they could then murder and bury under the patio.
Sure, she's also frustratingly dense at times. At times it impossible to avoid envisioning grabbing her and shaking some sense into her. Her schemes to avoid the bank, and her lies to her friends and family just build upon each other until they explode in her face in the best way possible. She makes a lot of mistakes and does a lot of stupid things, but you still root for her.
Life would be a lot easier if conversations were rewindable and erasable, like videos. Or if you could instruct people to disregard what you just said, like in a courtroom.
Finally, there's a dash of romance, of course. It's cute and funny, and thoroughly predictable. But no one reads a book like this looking for something mysterious and twisty. It's just good old-fashioned contemporary romance. Overall, I liked it, and I think there's a reason hundreds of others enjoy it too.

I've read one of Sophie Kinsella's stand-alone books and I was hooked. I immediately loved her! I read more stand-alones. I saw this books along with the next books in the series, but I didn't buy them. I wasn't interested. I was getting my hair done yesterday and since I haven't read this one yet, I bought it. It was a risk, but then I thought, "It's Sophie Kinsella. It's probably good too." and I was right!

Finally finished this book....it was supposed to be a quick, light read while I was on vacation (I really enjoyed a different book by this author for fun, light reading) but this one just kept going and going and going with the same thing over and over. She has a shopping problem...and a lying problem...got it. I found this book and the main character really annoying. I do like the feel of the authors style...very sit-com-ish...but I will not try any more from this particular series. First book of 2013 is finally behind me though..

She goes through many different attempts to help her spending, like cutting back and getting a second job, but nothing works. And the bank is chasing her up, but still, she spends.
This is the pinnacle of classic modern UK Chick lit. I've had a fair few people talk to me about it and recommend it, so when I saw it was discounted on kindle I thought I would grab it. And honestly, I don't get the huge love for it. It was ok, I didn't hate it, but I'm not bothered about continuing and I've read better from Kinsella. I think Kinsella is better in the stand-alone novels she writes.

This whole series is perfect for light, fun reading
Rebecca Bloomwood is the funniest person ever. As stressed out as this book could make someone, it is written so light heartily and hilariously that you feel absolutely fine! She cracks me up with every decision she makes
I am very much among the minority I am sure, when I say I loathed this book. The main character was so shallow and annoying, I just could not get into it. Put me off Sophie Kinsella's books for years.

This was a fun read and I liked it better than the first two books I read by her. I still feel the dialogue goes overlong needlessly sometimes and I can't figure out if that's a British thing or a writer finding her voice thing. Overall, though, this was a good, fluffy read and I'll read the next in the series.
I was surprised by all the negative reviews. I thought this book was lovely when I first read it - went on to buying the whole series. It was great reading something not so serious - completely laid back, very funny. It's a refreshing break from the angsty teenager-y stuff that's extremely morbid and quite dull. I loved it, definitely recommend the series to anyone who is looking for some light reading.
