So well written. I was moved to tears in many parts. It was difficult to read her raw storytelling of her mother's journey battling cancer and her ultimate loss. Her writing was so effortless that it made the discussions on grief, guilt, regret easy to feel and understand.
I loved the descriptions of food and how she connected not only to her mother but to her korean roots through it.
I just wanted to give Michelle a hug 🫂 and tell her how proud her mother would be of her. And how we all make mistakes as adolescents and young adults but its how we grow from them.
What a great start to the new year.

I had heard this was good so I started reading it and couldn't stop. Zauner has a way with words, capturing adolescence, grief, the honesty of emotions, and challenging parental relationships indescribably well. Further, she ties her story up so neatly with the loss of her mother. It would be easy to stray from the focus but especially with our relationship with our parents, they work their way into many facets of our lives. Anyone that has lost someone, particularly to cancer, will have some sort of hard time with this. In summary, it's a devastating read written with heart and honesty.

There are many things I'd like to write about this book but most of them seem cheap and fake.
I guess this is the kind of book you call "raw" "emotional" or something along the lines, but i won't do it.
This is a book that knocks a real punch into you. Reading it felt kind of like watching a movie, i can't pinpoint exactly why. There were many moments where I was on the verge of tears, am I even now as I write down my review.
The formula was different than what I expected. From the blurb i thought each chapter would start with a trip to H Mart. Instead it's more of a continuous story.
I have one regret on this book and it's my poor vocabulary regarding various products. I wasn't able to imagine many dishes because simply I've never heard about or taste many ingredients, and even if i did, i wasn't aware of their English names. But this is just my personal struggle as a non native speaker
This book also provides a special bond with Michelle's music. as you read into many of her lyrics you can track were they came from and why. It's one of a kind experience

Well, for starters, ow. I don't know what else to say. If you've lost a loved one you will cry. If food is a love language for you like it is for so many, you will be inspired, but you will also cry. Lots of crying will be involved. Be nice to your fucking mom, dude.
