I really liked this book.  I liked the characters and I'm a fan of baseball, so I also really enjoyed that aspect of it.   I really liked the baseball community and the differing ideas about what it takes to make a team and the way everyone watches out for each other.

Now I need to go back and read the first book in the series.

I absolutely devoured this book over about two days and am already itching to reread parts. I laughed out loud. I smiled. I was sad. It was a solid slow burn romance. I would've liked a teensy bit more conflict but ultimately felt it was a very healthy relationship which I think was the author's goal.

📝 This was a lovely story of two queer men who deal with what it is to be a couple in 1960 when one of them is at least sort of famous (pro baseball player). The connection between them felt real, like they saw each other fully and cared a lot for each other. And they were clearly very attracted to each other as well.

🎧 Single narrator, Joel Leslie, who has done several of this author's books. He did a good job overall, but sometimes it was a little hard to tell when we switched perspectives between MCs because the voice/tone only changed a tiny bit.

🌶️ There's some spice in the book, but it's mostly foreplay. The "main events" are skipped over. But the stuff that is on the page is full of sexual tension.

What a beautifully written book about grief, love, and perseverance. Slow-burn romances aren't usually my first choice, but this one makes me want to pick up another one! I've never been so invested in a pair of characters in my life. It's refreshing to read about two adults with complete lives that come together and simply love each other. And they communicate. God, they communicate. The whole point of the romance is that they talk to each other, that they're honest with each other, and they recognize each others' bids for connection.

This was incredible. Mark is a new favourite character of mine, and my only gripe is that this book wasn’t 200 pages longer.

BASEBALL, QUEER HISTORY, AND GAY LOVE!! What more could you want? This was a lovely historical romance set in 1960s NYC. Cat Sebastian somehow manages to address and include the time period's intense institutional homophobia but keep the book soothing and sweet. I loved the two surprising older straight men characters in here who become unlikely lovable allies. Eddie and Mark are wonderfully drawn, complex people.

I am BEGGING Cat Sebastian to give this kind of care and attention to some mid-century queer women. Cat, the professional women's baseball league (1943-1954) is right there!

Beautifully performed by Joel Leslie in audiobook
