A decent depiction of life in that era and what it was like for the poor of England going to the colonies. However, I found the story a little bland. I didn't really feel any excitement or suspense, just meh. It wasn't a particularly uplifting or inspiring book either. The dialogue is pretty boring too. I did like the commitment to family and love for family that was the main theme throughout.

As far as children's stories, this was good to share the struggles a family in England may have had in 1609-1610. It also is good for sharing the struggles that the Sea Adventure ship went through in its travel and also when it reached Jamestown.

My sons actually really liked this story and were engaged with each chapter I read to them. They felt a connection to the characters.

If you want a book to explain the history of Jamestown and the voyages there, this one doesn't really have a lot of that included. It is mainly the fictional story of three siblings trying to reach their father who had sailed for the Americas. It did mention people like Captain Newport, but not much else. Most of the book was about their life in England and the Bermudas where their ship got stuck (in real history) for a few months.

Therefore as an adult, I didn't really care for it that much but it was definitely a good one for 8-10 year olds. 2.5 stars

「Don't be putting blame on yourself. Life is hard for you now. When you lose someone it's like- like having to find your way again」

「She'd lost her way, but she found it again, so she wasn't a crosspatch anymore」

Selesai dengan sekali duduk, dengan polosnya liat hanya dari judul, wah cerita tentang singa (yang benar benar hewan) ternyata yang muncul adalah pengetuk pintu kuningan dengan bentuk kepala singa.
This is clearly not your typical happy story, but it full of adventure packed in only 117 pages.
I don't think i can be as strong, as responsible and as brave as those three siblings especially Amanda if i were her. She was only eleven when she had to become the head of family to protect her younger siblings with only the lion's head door knocker by her side.

Pretty standard white-people-suffer-while-coming-to-America book. Static characters, light on detail, and nothing for the reader to care about. Meh.

This held the children’s attention for most of the book (5 and 9yo), but they would get bored now and then. I thought it was pretty alright for a read aloud book. We tied it into our investigation of Jamestown so it certainly served its purpose without all the gruesome details of The Starving Time and such.

This book was recommended in our history curriculum to tell about life in England and the journey to the Jamestown colony. While it did tell a story about that time, I can’t say it was incredibly informative. I think the details about the journey over and the wreck of the Sea Adventure were somewhat helpful in adding to our study of history. I wish there had been more detail about the Jamestown colony but it was only a somewhat interesting read-aloud for our family. The traditional narratives about the English facing off or being at war with the “Indians” was fairly prevalent in this book. At one point an English woman questions the young girl about her plans to go to America, saying that “Virginia is a terrible place, full of wild Indians and wild beasts.” We have learned so much about the indigenous people of the Americas so my 11 and 8 year old commented on the inaccurate portrayals, but not all kids have learned a more complete look at history so be mindful when choosing this to support a learning goal.

This book was an ok read to show the journey across the ocean of early colonists in the U.S. But not a great story or hugely captivating.
