An ending that shows character growth is better if the story also has character growth. This book was a complete disappointment for me, unfortunately.

had to stop reading when Sy was nearly strip searched and Reggie pretty much totally brushed it off. I just couldn't figure out what the tone of the story was supposed to be. Sy went through some incredibly traumatic events with homophobia and Islamophobia and then it'd be the next chapter and it's just Reggie communicating solely through sexual innuendo like what?

I love the found family aspect in this book. The end has me on tears. The way Sayyd finds himself over this book is amazing!! Such a cute story!

3.5 rounded up. This wasn’t the lighthearted romp I was expecting but I’m glad I kept going. It takes on a lot— Islamophobia, homophobia, abuse, protests, and bombings— but at its heart, the novel is about finding your own place in the world. And that even at the worst of times or moments of despair, there is always hope.
