Much better than the last installment. Walt's back at home now, exploring his odd relationship with his deputy, and back to solving a case that speaks to his present and his past.

Great characters plus great dialogue set in a place I'd love to see someday all add up to one very enjoyable read. Highly recommended.

Audible version: 3.5 stars. Like with many of these series, I care less about the mystery than getting to know the characters and just feeling the comfort of familiar voices in the narrators. but the stories still have to engage. This one was told in two different times - one during the Vietnam war and the other in the present. I normally avoid any tales of war, but figured I'd stick with Walt through this. I'm glad I did. It still had Henry and Dog, so that was worth it too. I've purchased all the way through #9, so I hope this guy keeps it up!

Craig Johnson created fantastic characters in his awalt Longmire series with extremely witty, intelligent and interesting dialogue. It is a challenge to see how things will coalesce in the end but Johnson ties things up well with plenty of suspenseful action.

This was my least favorite Longmire book I’ve read. I didn’t like the style of this one. Every chapter included flash backs and I felt it introduced too many characters and wasn’t clear of how it fit together. The side characters just sat on the sides until it was convenient for them to come in. Some of my favorite characters seemed benched and just came and went in. Their involvement felt choppy.

Another good book in the series. This one had two stories going at the same time--one took place during Walt's time in Vietnam. Both stories converge at the end and wrap up nicely. That's what I love about this author--the stories always work well and aren't convoluted.

This was my least favorite in the series only because there were a lot of Vietnam War flashbacks that made the story feel choppy. Overall, I still love Sheriff Longmire and gang, and will keep reading the series.

Even more disjointed than the last, but this time in a good way that I didn't actually expect to be good until it was. I have a positive loathing for stories that split back and forth across two time separated story lines, but this manged to make a go of it that I didn't hate.

Which sounds like faint praise, I suppose, but the upshot is that I enjoyed a form I normally hate, and the flow between time periods actually worked.
