Please stop giving unrealistic comp titles for books. I saw this book compared to The Hunger Games and Squid Game prior to picking it up. And while I can see the small thread that was used to connect those comp titles to this book, it’s not really what comes to mind when you hear those names and that element could be attributed to many other books that wouldn’t have set the bar so high.

Overall, it was a fun dystopian read with a beautiful first edition print run, but I think I would have enjoyed the story more if not for the very high expectations that were set.

Snowpiercer x The Truman Show x
What Happened to Monday?

I think I would appreciate this story more in a different format, such as a series. I needed more time with the individual characters to care about them. The stakes, while high, weren't enough for me to feel any real tension or concern for the characters.

Some worldbuilding elements detracted from the story (
like the "mirrors" mentioned in other reviews)
, but perhaps they will make more sense in the sequel.

Reminiscent of the Hunger Games and Snowpiercer, this translated work touched on subjects of class and the manipulation of celebrity figures for propaganda. We follow Chobahm as she is whisked away from her lower class life into a life of glitz and glamour, and in front of the cameras as she takes the place of her celebrity look-alike. Forced to pretend to be someone she has idolized her entire life, she discovers that the life in Snowglobe is everything but what's been fed to them. With secrets being uncovered not just about Snowglobe, but also about her life, Chobahm is determined to let these secrets spill while risking her life and the lives of her loved ones.

this would be normally be more of a 3-3.5 but considering the intended audience a 4 makes more sense

the best descriptor i can give is that this reads like a k-drama, which seems apt considering how much of this book is an examination of viewer-driven media. it was really entertaining and addicting to read and the twists and turns of the plot were ridiculous and over-the-top in the way only a k-drama would be. i can totally tell why this was a hit in korea.

I really wanted to like this, it has a strong premise and starts off really strong. It reads like the author got some great ideas as she was writing and explored them and dropped off her other ideas without ever intending to pick them back up. I went from liking the story to being pretty bored with it a number of times.

It reads like "Eat the rich, but only some of the rich because we actually like a lot of the rich"
