I was obsessed with the movie as a kid (and still enjoy a rewatch) and I thought it would be a quick and fun thing to read out of curiosity. I wish I hadn’t, this book aged horribly.
Also I was absolutely shook by LILLY HAVING STALKER WITH A FOOT FETISH!?!

I feel cruel rating this so low but the truth must be spoken!!
I’m personally not a huge fan of epistolaries so this wasn’t a favorite of mine. It did read a too youthful for my taste and there was just a little bit too much information on algebra homework. But cute to see the inspiration behind one of my old favorite movies!
I found myself pitying Mia more so than rooting for her to succeed. Grand-mère was a smoker and not likable or charming at all. Lilly was just so annoying and a terrible friend. Her brother seemed okay but I’m just like - skip! Her dad is irrelevant, the mom is sorta relevant but adds so little to the story. That one popular boy is an icky jerk. But everything gets solved in a matter of two pages. It’s a heck of a lot of build up and mindless algebra and complaining about her chest size for nothing big to really happen. I know I’m not the target audience but this was just boring.
One of those rare cases where the movie is better?!?

I know I'm not 15, but this didn't age well - I understand the format and it does read authentically enough to pass the story but it's so unlikeable and whiny, I struggled despite it being a short book

I think this book gets 4 stars for nostalgia mostly, but 4 stars none the less. My first time reading it at 29, when the movie is a beloved childhood favorite. To be fair this book with the movie only has about a 15% similarity. But it think it stands on its own. Is it a super deep book? No. Is it accurate as a diary of a 14 year old in the early 2000s, yes
