One of my go-to leadership case study books. Submarines are a super interesting domain that most of us would never otherwise get exposure to. The semi-autobiographical format makes the book a compelling and memorable read.

“Turn the ship around!” was recommended to me as a good read for people taking the role of Scrum Master. It is one of the first books about leadership I have ever read. I really appreciate the idea of leader-leader model, in terms of making the scrum team self-organizing and preparing conditions for the empowerment of team members. Now I better understand the idea of not giving subordinates strict orders or exact solutions, but rather getting them to create their own solutions. Provided examples and stories were clear enough to grasp, although I had no previous experience with military terminology. However, it was a little bit hard for me to get familiar with all the positions on the ship and their meaning. As a result I don’t know how to make an exact translation from them to the roles at the company I work for. All in all, I would recommend it to anyone interested in empowering teams in their workplace.

The story of how Mr. Marquet "turns the ship around", allowing his crew to flourish and realise its full potential, is inspiring.  It feels very "real", and by the end of the book you almost feel like you spent time on the submarine with the crew.

Since the events described in the book are almost 25 years old, some of the "groundbreaking" approaches described in it are nowadays widely regarded as best practices.  Other insights and reflections feel still fresh and innovative to date (2023).  Either way: the book is still a relevant reading given that "best practices" are still espoused by a minority of leaders.

While Mr. Marquet is surely a remarkable leader (again: he did what he did 25 years ago, so: truly innovative!), he is only an average writer: the book could benefit from a bit more flare, and the narration from a bit more structure.  As it is, the book feels more as a collection of thoughts and experiences on leadership rather than a cohesive "model".

Marquet delivers both an impactful teaching style and entertaining read in this life-changing book on leadership.

This book has made a tremendous impact on my leadership style even after a few days. Though in the book he calls the leadership approach "leader-leader", on his website and YouTube channel, he calls it Intent-Based Leadership.

I originally found this book because I was trying to figure out how I could motivate some team members who were not as engaged as I hoped. I gained so much more from this book. It has truly helped me put words around some leadership concepts I already exhibited, while challenging me to fully embrace Intent-Based Leadership on my team.

His writing style follows this very effective pattern:
1. He presents the reader with a question to open our minds to the concept.
2. He illustrates the concept through real-world examples from his past.
3. He concisely defines the concept with a consistent pattern (... is a mechanism for control, competence, or clarity).
4. He closes the chapter with thought-provoking questions

This approach has helped me to quickly identify areas of growth for myself. It has also helped me remember the core concepts and internalize them.

By far, this has been the most helpful and entertaining book on leadership that I've read and I plan to refer back to it and the other resources he's made available online.
