This was one of my more anticipated reads for this year and I did enjoy it. It wasn’t my favorite, but I didn’t dislike it. I honestly think this was more of a 3.5 stars for me.
It was interesting to see that the non-magi were the ones that were oppressed instead of the magi. Of course, I did just finish a book that was the complete opposite, so that may be why I found it interesting

Oooooh this was extraordinarily enjoyable. The authors note lets us know that she has Indian and Persian heritage, of which she drew on to create the fantastical world of Ambar. The world and setting were so rich, and the writing created vibrant images in my mind.
I started off listening to the audiobook while stitching or working, but found that due to the descriptive nature of the text I couldn’t fully take in the story if I wasn’t focused solely on it - so I ended up switching to the ebook.
I loved both of our MC’s, Gul and Cavas. Each time I read a chapter in one POV, I couldn’t wait to get to the next. Gul’s character particularly impressed me. She actually feels like a teenager (she’s 16). She’s quick to anger and impulsive at times. She makes mistakes and says things she regrets. This all made her feel very real rather than a typical idealised fantasy heroine.
Cavas too was very likeable, and I’m enjoying the slow burn nature of his relationship with Gul.
The narrators were both emotive and got into their respective characters. Though, the guy sounded like Matthew Broderick 😆

Awesome book. It was giving me "The Gilded Ones" kinda vibe for most of it, which means I'll definitely be reading the next one.

Hunted By The Sky by Tanaz Bhathena is a fantasy set in medieval India. The story follows Gul,a girl with a star shaped birthmark and a prophecy which foretells that a girl with a star shaped birthmark would overthrow the tyrannical ruler of Ambar. This lays the foundation for the plot.
I'm so happy to be reading an own voices fantasy after a long time. The setting is in medieval India with several elements of magic introduced. There are a lot of mentions about Indian culture such as saree,pallu,kachoris etc which made my heart happy.
The main character Gul is very well written and we are able to empathize with her. The side characters such as Cavas,Juhi and Amira are also well written and we have a lot of diversity. This books deals with several social issues such as caste divide, discrimination, gender equality etc. The people in this story are divided into magi and non magi and the tension between both the groups takes up a considerable part in the plot.
The word building is great and we are transported to the world of Ambar as we read. The pacing is good with alternate POVs of Gul and Cavas. There are several twists throughout the book to keep us on our toes and the ending was done very well. I can't wait to read the sequel which comes out later this year!

Okay, it's not often that I give a book a half star... this just called for it. There was so much in this book, so many great things, but also so much that had me wanting different outcomes, or change in pace, or in emotion. So, I couldn't quite get to the a full four, but there was no way I could place it right there at a three either. Because, if you've heard (or read) this book by now, then you know how much is filled up in those pages.
Now, here's my reasons why it's all a mix of feels... and there's a lot. We have Gul, whom at first gives me that kind of "I don't quite know what to do with you" feels. That has to do with her character kind of being all over the place, but it also helps with how she's been brought to the us, with the loss of her loved ones and the craziness surrounding her youth. And though I feel for her, sometimes I wasn't the biggest fan of the way her character came off.
Again, a mix of feels. I can't take from her though that she's resilient, a fighter, and "the chosen one", because yes, she's Neo in here (well, not all Matrix style, but def changing history). The one with the star-shaped birthmark that will bring an end to one of their most darkest times in history. With that said, those first lines in this book are shocking and telling of what this world is all about. And yes, it was intense. What a way to start a read!
That definitely kept me going, wanting to find out more about those called Sky Warriors and why they were bent on destroying lives because of a chosen one. Or, the Sisterhood of the Golden Lotus with all their secretive ways and magical abilities. They were my absolute favorite group in here. I wasn't always a fan of how some of their stories were portrayed, but it made for a bigger impact (in why the chosen one needed to end all of it).
Then came Cavas, which cannot be forgotten because his role is just as important in here. So yeah, again... sometimes I was all about who he was and where he was going, then the other half I was not that drawn by him. Which, caused me to be uninterested at times. See what I mean, it's really a roller-coaster in here. That brings me to the relationship between himself and Gul. At times, it was on fire, then it fell a bit flat, and then I was not sure how to feel. But, the in-between of it all was pretty great.
But, what had most of my attention was the magical aspect of the this world. There are Truth Seekers who can tell if you're lying (a dangerous gift), those called Whisperers that can talk with animals (that plays a big role), others that can do future readings, wield dead magic (you've got to read this to find out more), and it goes on. Plus, the truth of Gul's lineage and why her abilities are far surpassing. Yeah, no matter the mix feels, it's definitely worth having them. Good read for sure!
