The movie (which is not that good) was EONS better than this book. What a confusing mess of a novel.

Unlikeable and flawed characters are in A Simple Favor, some you don’t like while some you just love to hate! This was a good one and I listened to the audiobook. Though some parts of it were easy to figure out, I did not know how this one was ultimately going to end. There are three narrators and one is just like Amy Dunne from Gone Girl, you just want to hate her so much! The three narrators bring us everything we need to know.
My main issue with the novel was a particular relationship that was constantly mentioned. It seemed like it was written to show the flaws of the character and also shock value from Bell. To me it was not needed and actually lessened my enjoyment of the novel. I even debated on DNF’ing (did not finish) it due to the constant mentions of the relationship. Another issue I had was that it comes off as a Gone Girl ‘lite’. I read Gone Girl when it first came out for a book club and absolutely loved it. This was before the hype came out with it and now every other thriller has some form of ‘Girl’ in the title.
I know it is a movie which I watched and the movie comparison will follow. I actually pictured Anna Kendrick as Stephanie and Blake Lively as Emily as I listened to the novel. They seemed perfectly cast based off the audiobook.

Everyone in this book is a psycho. I don’t even know how to write a review on this because it was so strange.
A creative, entertaining dark humor story that the movie adaptation failed to portrait. My first encounter with A Simple Favor was through the movie -- which I was super excited to see --, but it didn't enchant me.
So, why not give the audiobook a shot? Well, I'm thankful I did. I don't know if it was the narrator, the writing, or the atmosphere, but it was fascinating. A page-turner mystery, I was hooked even before I've hit page 50. Our female lead is quite boring when compared to Emily, but I kept on keeping on because I kinda fell in love with them.
Stephanie and Emily -- you will love to hate them. Well-constructed, interesting, and I dare say captivating characters. Between the story many twists and turns, we get to know them on a deeper level and finally see how complex creatures they are.
But Emily ought to be my favorite. She's such a bright, intelligent person that her ending felt off to me, and that's the main reason why I only gave it 3 out of 5 stars. Such a disappointing finale.

This could be more of a 2.5 since it never really kept me on the edge of my seat and since it's a thriller... well that is a bit problematic.
Stephanie is best friends with Emily and their sons are best friends. So, when Emily asks Stephanie to pick up her son due to a work emergency, Stephanie answered with a quick yes. It wasn't a problem at all... until Emily didn't come and pick him up or answered any calls or texts. The question quickly became: what happened to Emily?
Stephanie is a horrible person. Horrible. When listening to her sections I felt like I was watching an episode of Bachelor in Paradise. Anyone who was attractive and walked near Stephanie she was ready to jump. She longed to be with them. If she was one of the seven deadly sins, it is lust. She could not control herself which also lead to an incest relationship and let me tell you, this was an incredibly disgusting relationship.
A lot of the chapters were Stephanie's blog posts, which was honestly probably my favorite part of the novel. I thought it showed the contrast of the persona that someone has in real life and the one the put online.
Emily is... something else. I'm not sure what to say about her other than that. She is something else.
A lot of this did feel like Gone Girl, which I think is why it didn't keep me on the edge of my seat. Once we get past the main mystery, I feel like the rest of it was rather predictable.
If this was someones first thriller than maybe they would enjoy it more, but for me, it was a little mediocre.

Read the book after seeing the moving. The movie improves on the material of the book.
I should preface this by saying that 'a simple favour' is one of my favourite movies. I think it's amazing. Although this book was just not good. The only reason I gave this 2 stars and not 1 was because I actually enjoyed the parts written from Emily's POV. The plot was honestly poor and felt extremely disjointed at times. It was written in dual timelines using flashbacks to tell the story. This was done okay but there were a few moments where it felt like it could have done with a new chapter or at least more explanation. The writing was okay but sometimes it was not great. Especially the use of exclamation marks in somewhat 'inappropriate' times. Finally, the ending was dreadful. I'll try and be spoiler-free but it was really badly done. There felt as though there was literally no ending and it was very ambiguous. Overall I just did not like this book which was such a shame.
