This book left me wanting a further installment, but mostly because I wanted it not because it needed it. There's character and relationship development and overall a solid conclusion.
I received an ecopy of this book through Netgalley; however, my opinions are my own.

Not Long enough.

That is my only critique. There is not enough in this book. I need more. There isn’t even enough fan-fiction to ease the sting of this series ending. Swift and Cas were so real and so perfect at the same time.

Why don't I like this? Bc the main character is stupid and I don't like stupid characters

This book builds upon the first one and expands the world in ways that are almost all for the good. Cas’s development continues to be a fascinating watch. The flotilla and broader network of pirates were good additions. The end of this book in particular had a few really excellent plot twists.

The thing that makes this book enjoyable for me is almost entirely the Swift/Cas relationship. Some of the conflict and angst feels a little bit unnecessary if I’m being honest, but i also live for it. Every scene they share is electric and engaging and bittersweet and I was rooting for them so much. A romance for the ages tbh. I adore them.

Edge of the Abyss picks up a month after The Abyss Surrounds Us with Cas having sworn her allegiance to Santa Elena and set free the Reckoner, Bao. The crew has taken off for the Neoatlantic to avoid the governments chasing after them. While there, they encounter a wild Reckoner (reclassified as a Hellbeast because Cas promised she wouldn’t kill anymore Reckoners). Upon realizing that Santa Elena wasn’t the only one with a Reckoner/Hellbeast pup, they realize that the ocean itself is in danger from the now-free creatures. The ecosystem is already struggling. Santa Elena calls together all of the pirates and they set off to hunt down the Hellbeasts.

I liked that this book was better than the first one. Emily Skrutskie’s writing has clearly improved and it makes me more excited for what else she puts out there. I also really liked seeing Cas have to work through the moral consequences of her actions. She struggles a lot with why she has remained with the pirates. We also got to know other crew members better in this book - it helped that Cas was no longer a prisoner, now she’s a crew member in the running to be the next captain. The romance with Swift also developed nicely, to the point where both of them had hurt each other but were trying to figure out a way through. It’s nice to see relationships that are struggling in books since usually we get the you’re-my-one-true-love-and-everything-works-out story.

It was also interesting to learn more about the world this story happens in. We returned to the Flotilla, learned about other pirate crews, and got a bit more insight into how the Southern Republic of California runs. The action kept the book moving, which was good because several parts included moments when the characters were waiting for something or someone and it could very easily have gotten dull. I will say, it was pretty easy to predict the SRC showing up at the end and I felt like Cas was an idiot for not asking them to come help… It was about time she tried to contact her family. In fact, I was starting to get really annoyed that she hadn’t reached out to them and at least apologized and confirmed she was alive. That finally happened, but it took a while. Cas also still didn’t have her motivations figured out for most of the book, but she kind of got there in the end - I’ll take it!

Overall, this is a really fun series. All of the good things from the first book transferred into the second and the writing improved, which made it a great read.

OMG, I want more, I am so in love with this world and I am so damn happy I found it. I sat down to read this book and the next thing I know it's pitch black outside and my afternoon has vanished. I regret nothing lol. I loved this book even more than the first. I loved the push and pull of Cas and Swift that tension and charge between them. Again it still felt like it was just naturally part of the story, not someone shoehorning a romance into it.
Santa Elena is still my favourite character that danger around her and authority was just so well written. You felt for the other characters that interacted with her. I also loved Varma and the time he spent with Cas it was a fab way to soften them both and see these other sides.
Cas reaching out to her brother was heartbreaking and so emotionally charged. I found myself lying there thinking what would I have done.
The ending was amazing and the big omg moment I was not expecting. I'm gonna say it again this universe would be so incredible on the big screen if done right.
