I was sad to finish the wonderful Shardlake series by C. J. Sansom, and was reluctant to give this series a try. Well, it worked out ok enough to continue on, but is not at the same level. This first entry in the series was nice, sweet, and intricately plotted. I sorted out all of the murder bits early on, but was surprised by the devious and decidedly un-monklike justice as well as the ambiguous treatment of miracles. Onward.
slow-paced

1/5 … It sucks that so many people love this book/series. I want to join the club. But I just could not for the life of me get into this. You could ask me right now what this book is about and I wouldn’t be able to tell you. I just finished it a minute ago. Too slow and boring for me. Literally what happened in this book? Someone tell me.

It took me a long time to get into it, I carried on reading out of sentiment and the end gravitated me into being okay reading the next of the series.

A nice little cozy mystery. Took its sweet time getting us a murder, which is fine (honestly I often like that). However, there was nothing else in that time to give us any tension. That slow, meandering section cost the book a lot of momentum. Once it gets going, it's solid, with enough by way of clues and intrigue to get you there, and solid theming to give that little bit of depth.

A fun holiday read, with some light shade thrown on the church and it's historical thefts and manipulation of vulnerable people for a little treat.

What a lovely cozy mystery! And unique too- I mean have you ever read a book about a medieval, middle aged, Welsh Monk solving a murder while also participating in a mission to bring the remains of a Welsh saint to England before? I hadn’t.

I was so enamored with Brother Cadfael, Sioned, Father Huw, and the people of Gwytherin that I think I would’ve enjoyed the book even if there had been no murder. That plot wasn’t anything novel or complex (if I’d tried harder I probably could’ve figured out whodunit. Even though I didn’t, I wasn’t surprised when it was revealed.) but it was interesting all the same. The subplots were also simple but pleasant to read.

I did find the prose to be rather flowery in terms of word choice and sentence structure, which did make the book a little tricky to read in some places. But once I got used to it, some of that difficulty eased. I also found the ending to be rather unsatisfying (and a bit morally grey). I was considering it a 4 star book up until that point.

Other than that, a truly cozy story with a delightful cast of characters. If you’re into cozy mysteries and want a more unique protagonist and backdrop, I think this series is worth checking out. I will definitely be reading on!
