This book was so heartwarming! Cece is trying to adjust to her new life with a hearing aid. She experiences life at a new school, with new friends, and has new challenges. To overcome these challenges, she imagines herself as a super hero named El Deafo!
I loved this book as a graphic novel because the author was so good at capturing her emotions in the illustrations throughout the book. The graphic novel format really enhanced the telling of the story!

Great moral behind the story, but the content was much more immature than I thought. But seeing as it was from the point of a child, I guess that's expected.

A comic style middle grade level book. A student becomes deaf due to an illness. It's a big change that leads them to feeling scared, alone, and embarassed. They see their deafness as making them different but learn to embrace it, and that it's a super power. A special listening device makes them feel powerful, and shows their classmates what they can do. This is a story that talks about a lot of changes this particular student goes through, and how they grow through it. Beautiful illustrations.
I know, I know -- it took me way too long to read El Deafo. I KNEW I was going to like it -- I don't think I've heard one negative review since it came out in 2014 -- I guess maybe I was saving it? Or because everyone else was so excited about it I didn't feel like I needed to read it because everyone was checking it out without my prompting?
In any case, I finally read it because we're having a local theatre come and do a performance of the play as our Summer Reading kick-off, and I am booktalking the book to get kids excited about coming.
And of course, it's just as good as everyone says it is. I can usually finish a J graphic novel in one one-hour sitting or so -- but I couldn't with this one. It's DENSE! There's a LOT going on, and there's a lot of text. We basically follow the author's childhood from the time she's little all the way up through elementary school, and there's a LOT to pack in.
The thing I loved the most about this book is that it's not JUST about being deaf (and dealing with the consequences and social ramifications, etc.). It's also about...being a kid. And all the weird relationships and feelings you have. And how weird and complicated (and wonderful) friendships can be.
It's great. I was, of course, silly to wait.

Loves this book!! It’s a must read for all upper elementary/middle school readers. CeCe Bell tells her story of growing up deaf.
This book was so sweet and lovely. It talks about growing up with a disability in a way that is super digestible for little kids. This felt so important. Chronicling what it’s like to grow up deaf allows for so much understanding. I loved it!
After seeing this graphic novel cycle through hundreds of hands in my fourth grade classroom, I finally read it myself. What a treat! Whimsically illustrated and honestly told, this story has a unique voice. I deeply appreciate how it illustrates the experience of the author/narrator. The empathy it builds in the reader is worth its weight in gold.
