Overall, I really enjoyed this book. It's rather lengthy, which in some ways is positive (it allows for full development of characters and plot) and some ways is negative (it felt like it was going to end in several places only for yet another terrible thing to happen to the point where I was just ready for it to end). Speaking of the ending, that's the part I wasn't completely satisfied with. I can see thematically why it might end the way it did, but it wasn't quite the way I wanted it to end (though I'm not entirely sure what that way might have been).

This was the exact kind of creepy story I love. Almost all of the scariness was in the tension and timing. We have information revealed to us about the history of the family and of the house in such a way that we're deep into it before we realize. I found myself looking over my shoulder several times while reading this one.

So, I'm absolutely torn up over this book. I haven't felt so conflicted in such a long time about a piece of fiction. I was so into this book as I was reading it, especially when I was about halfway through. I loved the climax and felt it paid off... then absolutely hated the ending. I'd still recommend it, but jeez.

(3.5 stars) I really enjoyed the beginning and was very excited to find out where the the plot was going to go but it ended up being kinda boring for me. Unfortunate because I felt like it had a lot of potential! Maybe it was my own expectations letting me down, haha.

Robin Miles's narration of The Good House by Tananarive Due is perfection. Her characters, no matter gender or age, are recognizable from each other. She conveys the depths of emotions involved in this book, anger, love, grief, regret, and hatred. There is a sense of building tension in the book which ratchets up with a calming spoken sentence from Miles. She does an incredible job with The Good House.

There is not much I can comment on the plot other than what is listed in the publisher's synopsis. The book transcends the mystery/thriller/suspense genres. It could easily be added to the horror and paranormal genres as well. The book contains one point that should probably have a trigger warning. I am not sure how to word it and not give away the plot. Maybe someone who is more skilled can do that.

I highly recommend The Good Book in audio format. It is a long listen but with Robin Miles leading you, you will want to take every step.

Two years after her son's suicide in the basement of her grandmother's house during a 4th of July party, Angela Toussaint returns to the house to try to get some closure. Things do not go as planned.

This is a supernatural horror dealing with the consequences of abusing magic.

I loved this book. Or. Well. I knew I WOULD love this book and that's why I stuck with it. The first 30% really dragged and it felt like way too much exposition and world building. It felt unnecessary. In the back half of the book you see it really IS necessary. I loved the twists and turns in this book and highly recommend it. If you feel like giving up I encourage you to stick with it.

I DO feel like 100 pages could easily be trimmed off of the damn thing if there wasn't such a focus on Angela's longing for her first love Myles in the early portion, but in hindsight I can let that gripe go.
