Definitiv düsterer als die ersten zwei Bücher und teilweise doch bisschen creepy. Das Ende war dann doch komplett anders als gedacht.
Was mich bisschen genervt hat: eine Krankheit nicht beim Namen zu nennen obwohl dem Leser schon nach drei Sätzen klar sein müsste was es ist. Aber immer dieses um den heißen Brei reden ist nicht meins.

Ashes to Dust begins with the excavation of a town that's been buried under ash and dust for over thirty years. Thóra's client had intended to stop the excavation of his childhood home but was instead granted permission to be the first to enter. Unfortunately for the client this behavior is deemed quite suspicious when three bodies and a disembodied head are discovered in the basement of said home.
This book begins with one of the most disturbing and strange murder scenes I've ever encountered. And it's fabulous! And let me stress again, highly disturbing.
The plot of Ashes to Dust is based on the eruption of Eldfell and the very real fate of Heimaey Island. And something called the Cod War. (Yep, as in fish.) I love, love, love the way Sigurdardóttir has built each of the first three books around such fantastic history. It's definitely one of my favorite aspects of the series as a whole. And it's interesting that, as the author noted in an interview, no one else took advantage of the Eldfell story for a book before this!

Três estrelas para um livro que, não sendo excecional, tem partes muito interessantes.
Para mim, que sou da área da geologia, interessou-me particularmente a parte da vulcanologia. O enredo é bem conseguido mas... O início é muito chato, parte da charada consegui adivinhá-la muito cedo e a outra parte, mesmo no final, pareceu demasiado forçada e com explicações incipientes.
As comparações com stieg larsson são, por isso, infundadas! ;) Ainda assim, lê-se bem!

Se gândise adesea că moartea era o opţiune dezirabilă. Însă în ziua aceea nu mai simţea la fel, fapt regretabil în lumina împrejurărilor. Când murise tatăl ei, după o luptă grea cu cancerul, se întrebase care este rostul lucrurilor pe pământ. „Cât de scurtă şi de măruntă pare viaţa, în definitiv”, meditase ea. Tatăl ei fusese stâlpul micii familii din care făcea parte, însă, la câteva luni după moartea lui, abia dacă-şi mai putea aminti cum arăta fără să se uite la o fotografie cu el. Şi încă ea se numărase printre apropiaţii lui – ceilalţi cât de repede aveau să-l uite? Odată moarte şi ea, şi mama, şi sora ei, n-avea să-şi mai aducă aminte nimeni de el, ca şi cum n-ar fi pus niciodată piciorul pe acest pământ. Gândul a adus-o în pragul disperării. Privindu-şi viaţa de la cap la coadă, şi-a dat seama că n-o să aibă cine să-i spună povestea. Că nimeni n-o să reuşească vreodată s-o spună aşa cum s-a întâmplat de fapt, aşa cum îşi dorea. Nimeni n-ar fi putut să pună totul cap la cap, darămite să mai explice şi lucrurile surprinzătoare care se întâmplaseră de curând. Totul se întuneca în jurul ei, dar a reuşit să-şi revină. Ştia că, data viitoare când i se va mai întâmpla una ca asta, s-ar putea să nu mai facă faţă.
Dacă n-ar fi fost aşa de slăbită şi de bulversată, ar fi putut măcar să se apere în loc să stea întinsă acolo, total neputincioasă. Probabil că i se dăduseră nişte medicamente; starea de somnolenţă n-avea cum să fie firească. Pe noptieră se afla un flacon cu pastile, pe care nu-şi amintea să-l fi pus acolo; privindu-l cu coada ochiului, şi-a dat seama că era flaconul cu sedative puternice, pe care le adusese acasă după ultima operaţie. Luni întregi, flaconul zăcuse neatins în dulăpiorul ei cu medicamente; nici gând să-l fi pus ea acolo şi, cu atât mai puţin, să fi luat o doză mare de pastile. Nu-şi amintea să le fi înghiţit, deci mai mult ca sigur că-i fuseseră puse mai înainte în mâncare. Îşi amintea mult prea bine gustul pastilelor, vinul pe care-l băuse n-ar fi putut în veci să-l mascheze. Senzaţia scârboasă de vomă pe care o simţea în gură nu era de la pastile – dar asta nu însemna nimic. A vomitat din nou şi a închis ochii, cu toate că se temea că nu va fi în stare să-i mai deschidă a doua oară. Kraftur framan af en lítið varið í lokahnykkinn. Umgjörðin flott og ein hliðarsagan athyglisverðari en sjálft morðmálið, sem er bragðdauft. Hin afundna Bella fær að njóta sín á kostnað Matthew. Hef verið að lesa Yrsu núna nokkuð þétt upp á síðkastið og það er gaman að sjá ýmis stíleinkenni brjótast út, t.d. er Þóra skemmtilegur karakter sem leitar lausna dyrum og dyngjum og fæst ekki um tilhæfulaust brambolt. Þessir frasar koma reglulega fyrir í Þórubókum 2 og 3 en sá þá ekki í fyrstu bókinni. Einhver apaköttur með rafbækur sem kann á uppflettinguna gæti samt haft mig að fífli núna.

Am really enjoying working my way through this series of books, and this one was my quickest read yet. If you like crime/mystery stories that develop fairly quickly and have multiple layers to them, AND you love Iceland, these books will tick a lot of boxes. I also really enjoyed the setting on the Westman Islands as I have visited this part of Iceland and written about it so knew the story of the 1973 Eldfell volcano eruption. I also liked that it was more modern history and a different type of story to previous two books that had "other worldly elements". My biggest criticism with this one was that I guessed 75% of the Whodunnit by about half-way through the story, which was satisfying until it was annoying because I was reading on for a long old time with no big reveal. Aaaand again I personally took some issue with there being some comments that felt misogynistic and fatphobic, and I also felt some elements of the rape culture which was touched on in various different ways could have been done with greater depth or exploration .

Another engrossing murder mystery from Yrsa Sigurdardottir. Again, the author links a modern crime both to events in Iceland's history and to secrets from the past. Nothing of the supernatural element that played a role in her two previous novels about Thora Gudmundsdottir, but lots of twists and surprises as the truth slowly surfaces under Gudmundsdottir's determined investigation.
