Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie never misses. A fantastic debut novel that showcases her power as an author. Adichie is an instant buy for me

A very well written slice of life story, which I personally find very enjoyable as a way to really see what a character is going through. The story itself was heart breaking in many ways, and Adichie's characters provided an array of perspectives that was really interesting.

While the subject matter was uncomfortable at times, it was done in such a compelling way, that I had to keep reading. I deeply felt the narrator's fears and motivations, and I felt genuine anger on her behalf

This book has a heavy topic of abuse. The main character, Kambili, is not independent and barely speaks up for herself. When her father beats her or pours boiling water on her, she doesn't do anything about it. It is frustrating and gripping, because the reader is anxious to see what will come of Kambili, but wants her to take a stand. Aid hie does a nice job of keeping the reader interested and adds character to Kambili towards the end of the book. The undertone of romance lightened the mood a bit, a stark contrast to that of abuse. It is a nice feature.
The ending of Purple Hibiscus was very satisfying, yet shocking. I will not say what happens, but I will say that nothing will prepare you for it. It ties the book up nicely. I think Adichie made one of he best endings ever in this book.
