Semiotics, FTW

This books has so many cool things for a true crime history buff spiritual nerd that it would be hard to list 'em all and expect people to believe me. At first, I thought this was just another derivative serial cash grab but the narrative changed my mind very quickly. It's one of those books you need to read a second time to spot the subtle nuances that give up the ending - I was suprised I missed the clues and got caught up by the protagonist's biases and thought process. A fun modern thriller with lots of diversity and inclusion representation, without insisting upon its "wokeness"; the strong female characters were worth the read. Triggers include death, violence, some gore and prostitution/mentions of human trafficking. Can't wait to check out book #2!

OMG I have been on a role with reading 3 star reads lately. This was a new author for me. Though I appreciated her in depth plot development, it droned on for much of the book and I didn't get much character insight individually. I understood the moments that were intended to be witty, but they did not land as easily as intended. It was not a bad read, hence my 3 star rating, but I do not foresee reading any other books from this author anytime soon.

Perfect blend of mystery and history

I loved this book. It kept me guessing right to the end. I love a book that teaches me new things without me trying.

It's so weird. Several times while reading this book it felt familiar. Like I had read it before. But, I checked a couple of different places and this book was only released about two weeks ago. So, it's just a strange case of novel déjà vu.

That aside, this book is fantastic. It's really smart and has strong characters. Some people will be put off by the sexual objectification that occasionally occurs by the characters. It didn't bother me. I will say that this book had me on the edge of my seat several times. It's the first book that I've read in a while that I would truly classify as a "thriller".

Highly recommend.

Liked it a lot!

It took me awhile to get into this novel, which surprised me because I loved Nickless's other series featuring Sidney Rose Parnell. However, roughly a quarter of the way through, I became hooked. I enjoyed getting to know the characters and am eager to find out what's next for Evan and (hopefully) Addie.

I had resisted buying this book because the description did not really attract me. I had loved the authors other books. And this book had great reviews so I gave in. And it was a big meh for me. There was nothing that made this book stand out in any way. The semiotics is somewhat interesting but the entire story was just average and by the end I was rushing to get done to move on to my next book.

What can I say? It had me at runes, bogs, forensic semiotics, and Vikings. I wouldn't recommend it for those who are looking for an adrenaline-fueled thriller, but if you tend towards geeky love of academic pursuits, this might be right up your alley.

It was OK, but it never really grabbed my attention hard.

July 2022: I found a new author to love.
story telling, loved the atmosphere, and learned a few new words and ideas. I live for novels like this.

April 2023: A reread prior to starting second book in the series. Loved it as much the second time around.
