After reading a few of the reviews for this book I decided to share my own input. I definitely agree that the protagonist, Reed, can be very frustrating to follow at times. She is whiny, naive, and weak. She refuses to stand up for herself, and is obsessed with becoming friends with girls who take bullying to an extreme.
But, if you continue to read the series, you begin to see Reed grow and mature in many ways. The character of Reed, though at times annoying, is in some ways realistic to a modern teenage girl. As the series moves on she grows into a very strong leader who rids herself of her whiny and naive personality.
I really enjoy this series, not because it is a literary masterpiece, but simply because its suspenseful and fun to read. The books are short and the storyline is exactly what is portrayed.
I am a teenager myself, the target audience for this book series, and I highly recommend it to other teenage girls like me who enjoy series like Gossip Girl, Pretty Little Liars, etc.

Blech! I cannot stand books where the entire novel/series is dedicated to "do this and be popular", or something along those lines. It makes me sick to think that some girls and guys actually crave this kind of stuff in real life.
Super easy read. Not the best I have read but definitely not the worst either. It passed a free afternoon. I wasn't reading this for its thought provoking story. I was reading it because I was bored and wanted something light. It filled my needs, however I won't be recommending it to anyone anytime soon.
This book had both it's good and bad moments.
For one, the main character Reed Brennan is the stereotypical girl I hate who lets herself get pushed around and tries to be what everyone else is. The other characters aren't very dimensional, Noelle is the typical 'Blair' bitch who abuses her friends who just seem to take it and aren't really given their own little personalities or stories.
The storyline in a whole was sort of rushed, it seemed like one moment Reed was going on about dancing at a party with a boy whom she had talked to all of about five time previously, and then the next moment they two of them were together.
Despite this, I enjoyed the book- maybe because I found it slightly mind-numbing, like I didn't need to think about what was really going on.

I absolutely loved this book, and the whole series. I can relate to the situation she's in and I ADORE the preppy, boarding school aesthetic. Ok maybe Reed isn't my favorite character ever, but there are so many other brilliant characters that make up for it. The whole series is extremely exciting, and I could absolutely not put them down. They're my number one quick, chick-lit, summer read.
Just as ridiculous as I remember. it's like reading fun, weirdly addictive, trashy tv.

It's been over 10 years since I read this last. I read it as a middle schooler and just loved the intrigue. Reading it now, however, I'm still pretty intrigued (hence why I'm willingly starting this series over) but it also upsets me.
Reed is so contradictory, both supposedly not caring what people think of her yet also sacrificing everything for the approval of some teenage girls. It's just sad to think of a young woman finding truth in any of these thoughts. There's so much more to life.

3.5*
Overall, this was a really fun book.
It was pretty much just what I expected it to be.
That said, I had some issues with the main character and her stupidity:
My first impression of her is that she can be rude and judgy in her head. She often acts selfish around certain people, and others just plain stupid. Her despreation made her seem like a ridiculous fool. Desperation to fit it, to be popular and cool like those girls...And she would let them use her and mistreat her, for what?
*may be spoiler*
Just to show you how pathetic she can be sometimes:
"How could she let her friends make me do this? Just because of some stupid image issue? Why didn't she stand up for herself?"
...
The speaker proceeds to do exactly what they told her too, allowing herself and others to be bullied but hypocritically blaming it on everyone else.
Also, I the author repeated many phrases so that it was a bit annoying. I counted them for you:
"It was all i could do...." count: 2 (i hate this saying)
"My heart went out to him/her" count: 4
"...face turned pink/red" 4
"I snorted a laugh" 2
I really loved how short and quick the chapters and whole book was.
While i dont love the authors writing, I did learn some new words and facts.
The setting of the school was fun.
The characters were mean and shallow, again, pretty much what you'd expect.
There was one point when I was super mad at the main character and something completely dumb she did, which lowered my rating and any exiting respect for her.
But there were also times when I was cheering her on for FINALLY standing up and saying no. I was so proud of her :)
Anyways, I already have the next two books and I liked this one enough to read them some day (partially bc they're so short and fun).
