I would highly recommend this book to anyone who likes having a blueprint for their writing. I found it very helpful and will use a lot of the concepts taught in this book in my writing process.

I didn't finish. I did skim through the rest to see if there was anything besides the pat, simplistic advice to write from character rather than plot, but there isn't. There are examples from her author friend. But she's flat out wrong about some things, and since she's a literary agent and not an author or literary scholar, it's not surprising that she doesn't know enough examples that fly counter to her personal preferences and disrupt her theories.

This really pisses me off because it's a waste of money, and I really did want to read a book about how brain science might inform your story or character building.

Interesting and inspiring - especially for someone who has always been fascinated by fairytale and folklore. The basic idea is to have a moral or single point to prove, and the character development is used to prove the singular point. Structure is important, but without a singular idea the story becomes paint by numbers instead of something that sticks with people. Not 100% in but it made me do some reassessment and I'd suggest it to any writer wanting to approach writing differently.

I need more examples to justify all her reasons. The introduction is good but I was less interested as I read on.

Zeer interessant! Tijdens het lezen kreeg ik heel wat aha-momenten voor mijn eigen boek.
Aanrader voor alle auteurs!

There is some very good advice in this book—very usable information for any writer. The knowledge and recommendations are solid.

However, I wasn't a fan of the delivery. The information is often vague and conceptual, and as the book progressed, it became even more so. Even with many of the “What to Do” sections, it was hard to distill what techniques were actually being recommended. As a reader, you have to weed around and patchwork the techniques together yourself to really get to the essence of the methodology.

As it stands, this book does have some valid information. But I found it hard to immerse myself in a DIY book that is convoluted, talks in circles, and doesn't have clear points of reference.
