kinda good but honestly a bit boring aye

the first part drags a little bit, but oh my god the second part is so good. it’s also really interesting if u think about the story in the context of french colonialism in algeria and how the racial dynamics of that shape the story. it’s a pretty easy and quick read that i’d definitely recommend. definitely one of those books thats a red flag when straight men like it though.

What an oddly fascinating book this was. If you read about The Stranger online, everyone talks about how it’s absurdist existentialism, and about how life has no meaning and nothing matters, etc., etc.  I guess it could be that. But in that case, I find it completely uninteresting. The way I read it… Our main character is on the spectrum and he can’t grasp the importance of what’s going on around him. It’s almost the polar opposite of what I think this book is supposed to be about, but that is absolutely how I felt reading through this classic.  If I missed the boat, and this is an existential exercise on the meaningless of life, I didn’t like it. If I’m right in my opinion, that this is a story told through the eyes of someone on the spectrum, I was transported. My opinion really is in a tug of war.  Because of that, I need to give it a middle of the road review.

I liked the simplicity of the prose, and I liked the premise and the progression of the plot. The characters were relatable in a way, or at least they felt realistic. Some of the descriptions were very simple and beautiful. But the narrator definitely annoyed me at times, because of how passive he was about everything. He clearly has wants and desires but it takes some sort of tragic moment for him to see it. He’s also definitely some sort of sociopath. I would have a high school student read this, if I were teaching high school lit.

In a chaotic and meaningless universe, it is absurd to seek meaning in any of it.
