My favorite kind of completely un-put-downable, edge of your seat, having you guess until the absolute final page suspense novel! This book is witty, funny, intriguing, unique, bizarre, and hair-raisingly eerie. I don’t believe I have EVER read a whodunit like this, and even though the crimes are patently obvious, you will absolutely be glued to your seat wondering…what the heck???

Murders, blackmailing, framing - and somehow, friendship - abound when three young Chinese children, two of whom are orphans, accidentally record a murderer kill his in-laws, and then the game’s afoot to escape the brilliant detective on the case.

Too, the moral dilemmas are so infuriatingly gray that while you think you know what should be done, your sympathetic heartstrings will tear you apart.

The writing style took a bit to get used to because it’s very clipped and sparse, sometimes even a bit cringeworthy (perhaps a translation issue?), hence the 4*. Yet once you get past that, it flows so smoothly and quickly that you will read this in a couple of sittings. I envy you, dear reader, for getting to enjoy this for the first time!

I am so confused about whether or not I liked this book. I liked the twist at the end and I really didn’t anticipate it but a lot of the time or even most it was completely unbelievable and had many plot holes, if you’re able to look past that it was good. But definitely didn’t read like a thriller

Chaoyang would've never expected that his life would be flipped around just because of a video. But he and his friends caught a murderer in the act, and decide to blackmail him to get money. But as Chaoyang's relationship with his father worsens, he spirals deeper and deeper, dragging his two friends with him.

I am so shocked and oh my god, the ending?!

The plot is very interesting. Although it was a bit slow at first, things began picking up during the middle. More and more things began to come up and Chaoyang and his friends had to keep coming up with ideas on how to deal with them.

The character I liked the most was definitely Chaoyang. I'm not including spoilers in this part of the review yet, but he is such a complicated and interesting character! I also think Pupu and Dinghao were very well-written.

*SKIP TO NEXT PART TO AVOID SPOILERS*
SpoilerHOLY SHIT?!?! I feel like Chaoyang knew that Zhang would kill all three of them. I'm pretty sure he spat out the drink because of his plan and not because it would affect his growth! He is such a gaslighting, manipulative little brat...But that's fucking cool.
I feel so bad for Pupu and Dinghao, though. It seemed like they really thought they could trust Chaoyang and Zhang with their lives...which was true but not in a good way.
Wangyao is a bitch, so good thing that she died.

Spoilers over

I highly recommend this book if you're looking for an exciting thriller that will suck you in and keep you invested till the end!

P.S. Love that I'm starting this year with a bang!

"He had committed the perfect crime- nothing could compare to the "accident" he had choreographed."

There is this mysterious feeling that surrounds the whole plot, setting, and all the characters that makes it unique. I wasn't sure if I'll end up liking the book at first because the writing/translating is a bit different, after all, it is a Chinese book.
I certainly wasn't expecting the ending, throughout reading the book I was wondering what the ending might be and there were many possibilities that the author could've done but the one that we're left with is a pretty good one.

My advice - don't put the book down until you'll be around 40% because that's when everything got better.
