While the book itself is interesting, the audiobook narrator mispronounces so many words, especially plant names, that it felt like minefield. The producers should have done more preparation to prevent this issue.

Good overview of nature and history of California (to San Mateo County).

I loved this book, it was long but a meditative read. I love my great state of California and was able to visualize all the places he traveled. It was so interesting to learn of our history. This is a great read, especially for a Californian.

Easy, interesting reading of much more information about this part of California (San Diego to San Francisco) than I was able to absorb in one reading! I took almost a month to meander through this well-researched look into history, geography, flora & fauna, and the current situation in a swatch of the West Coast. Made several notes of places to investigate on my own travels. Recommended it to several friends. It’s not compelling reading yet well worth the time I spent in its atmosphere. A bit overwritten in parts … what one might call purple prose but not so much as to completely put off a reader who’s interested in the mission conquest & everything that instigated. I’m probably going to try his Coastal book later.

Repetitive. Had some good parts that I really enjoyed, but they were scattered so far apart it was hard to keep reading to the next little tidbit.

Interesting subject matter and a good scheme for an exploration of a slice of California. The writing is often a bit pretentious and sometimes too self regarding. The recording is marred by frequent mispronounciations (A "draught of beer" read as a drought, for example).

Neely's rich descriptions of the landscape -- the birds and trees and rolling hills -- is clearly a love song to his home state. But this love of California is also in conflict with his knowledge of the genocidal history of the early settler colonialists. While there are a few vignettes of the charming and/or salty people he met along his journey, this story needed more people and a more personal touch. A long walk is nothing if not a journey of introspection and I would have like to know more about him and what was going on in his head.
