so I swore i was never going to read another book about white suburbia because I am always disappointed in the outcome. The concept of this book won me over and I broke my rule. Sadly I learned yet again rules are not meant to be broke.
I was really hoping for a great horror with the backdrop of suburbia to create a brilliant jarring dynamic. This book didn't do that at all. It just felt like the kind of book a WASP would read to feel edgy while in reality this was just a boring rehash of things we've seen again and again.
I desperately wanted to like this book but it just felt to flat and formulaic.

Amy, Liz, Jess and Melissa are a tight-knit group of friends and neighbors who get together for a monthly wine night. Liz is having a She Shed built for them in her back yard so they can briefly escape the mundanity of their lives. As construction begins, the excavators unearth a long-buried demonic force and Liz seemingly turns into a cruel bombshell overnight. Initially, the ladies think Liz might just be going through a mid-life crisis but when the demon begins to threaten them and their families, they band together to save their gentle, selfless friend and cast the spirit back to hell.
Suburban Hell is a delectable blend of character-driven horror and humor with underlying themes of friendship, grief, loss and sexism. A few scenes gave me the creeps but the violence and gore are very mild and the humor makes it easy to swallow. This fun, delightful story highlights the strength of women and mothers who shoulder the invisible mental, emotional and physical load to keep everything running smoothly within their families and communities—all while exorcising demons from their friends bodies. If you enjoy campy, light horror with a side of dark humor, I highly recommend this one.

Having moved from Chicago proper to the suburbs last year, I couldn't resist when I saw the description of this one. It had its moments, but overall the pacing just felt off and nothing too original here. Which is surprising in a book about a haunted she shed.
This was so much fun!
A horror comedy between the heavier stuff is always a welcome respite.
The characters in this novel are so relatable I found myself comparing them to people I know in real life. As a mom of a child around the same age as the ones in this book, it was thoroughly entertaining to read about similarities in my own life. There were laugh at loud moments and a few tears.
Honestly, what mom hasn’t thought their child’s dolls were creepy, anyway? No? Just me?
For a debut novel, I think this author knocked it out of the park and I can’t wait to read what she comes up with next.

Once again, a debut novel knocks it out of the park!
What a solid fun time this comedic horror was! If I had to make an example it's Desperate Housewives meets The Exorcist (it's also said to have a Bad Moms meets My Best Friend’s Exorcism comparison) and boy, I couldn't stop turning the pages!! An absolute delight.
Amy, Jess, Liz, and Melissa are the best of friends but something or something is testing them at all odds.
If you're looking for something with a little substance and nothing to take too seriously, this is it! I read this at the right time and it left my spooky loving soul satisfied. So yes, 5 stars it is!
The opening line is "None of this would have happened if it weren't for the She Shed."
Note to self and others: NEVER attempt to build a she-shed, and if so? builder beware.
⚠️ Mention of animal death
Big thank you to @netgalley and @putnambooks for this e-arc!!
Suburban Hell is expected to publish on August 30th

I absolutely loved the start of this with the line "opening up my email and have a bunch of 20% off discounts." I felt attacked, but this book had me laughing and smiling and while it wasn't super original. It was still fun.
Amy, Liz, Melissa, and Jess are all neighbors and best friends. During a monthly wine get together, they christen Liz’s she- shed and things take a sinister turn.
I expected more of a dark, campy comedy. Kind of like Jennifer’s Body, but it had some more darker material than expected.
Parts of this felt.. off? Everyone seems to notice the changes in Liz, but only her friends are actively trying to get to the bottom of it. Like her own husband just ignores her behavior? I don’t know, it felt weird to me.
Also, the ending felt really rushed. There was a lot of build up with the demonic possession and the ending fell flat for me, personally.
It was a quick, spooky read. Just wanted a bit more!

I’m not saying that I’m a GREAT friend but I would at least have tried to talk to my friend a little bit more before she went fully fucking possessed. Like her nails are falling out and she smells bad? BB we gotta chat.
