In every book that features a member of the Wilder family as a protagonist, there is an atmosphere of agony tied to their patriarch's illness and inevitable loss. the author's ability to navigate each narrative through a different notion of grief is both beautifully elegiac and cruelly poetic. by molding their closure and making the farewells they needed to move on with their lives, she brought out the different characters' grief in a nuanced manner. this book was not exception to the Wilder rule, it was filled with heartwarming and heart wrecking family moments.❤️
”trust made you do strange things, didn’t it?”

This was so good. I absolutely loved getting to see the Wilder family again (I may have geared up a couple of times). Cameron and Ivy were perfect for each other. I loved how Ivy realized her worth and found who she truly was in the small town where her mom was from with Cameron. Cameron was dealing with a lot, but Ivy stepped in where he needed her and became a great support system.

With every book Karla Sorenson does, I just love her writing more and more! This series is probably my favorite from her, the found family, the themes of grief, love, and acceptance, are all so strong that I’m crying in every book so far! I know the future books are going to do the same as they will deal with the aftermath of losing their father!
Ivy and Cameron had sparks that flew off the page from the moment they got stuck in the elevator, but it got good when Ivy became Cameron’s client. She got along with everyone from the family so well, and just fit in so well, it was no shock that she fell hard and fast for Cameron who was already a goner! Ivy is such a wonderful character, who is a little ice cold from her family, but man when she melts everyone loves her!

"I’ve never had a person before. Someone who’s mine. That I get to love and take care of. And God, you’ll probably regret it because I don’t even know if I’m good at having one, but you’re it, Cameron Wilder."
- Small town
- Opposites attract
- Black cat x golden retriever
- Broken elevator meet-cute
- He calls her duchess
- No breakup
- Dual POV
Premise: she runs away from a dressmaker in her mother’s wedding dress after panicking about her upcoming arranged nuptials to a childhood friend, gets stuck in a hotel elevator with a hot stranger, and they kiss… only to go their separate ways until she shows up in his small hometown and hires him to renovate a family house she was gifted on her 25th birthday.
The number one reason to read this book is 100% for Ivy’s character development. It was hands down my favourite part. She’s this rich, closed-off “black cat” who’d never let anyone in until Cameron.
"Vulnerability was a curse in my upbringing. It was a flaw to be removed, something to be cut out with the neat clip of a blade."
The way that both Cameron (the epitome of a loyal, selfless golden retriever) and the Wilders didn’t relent and slowly pushed past her wall and made their way into her life and heart was incredibly heartwarming. She didn’t think she was capable of love, and he showed her how easy it was for him to love her.
"I wasn’t trying to change who she was; I just wanted her to trust me with the parts she kept hidden."
Speaking of the Wilders, I adore this family so much 🥺. Be warned that you'll inevitably cry at the end because you're going to fall in love with them, too.
A final reason to read this book is for Karla’s writing because man, it was beautiful.
Okay, excuse me, I'm going to go read the next book in the series now!
